This lot includes the antique newspaper shown in the corresponding image. This issue of "Columbian Centinel" is dated February 11, 1792 (Whole No. 814 / No. 44 of Vol. XVI). The "Columbian Centinel" was published from 1790 until 1840. This 1792 issue states that the newspaper was printed on Wednesdays and Saturdays by Benjamin Russell in Boston, Massachusetts. The "Columbian Centinel" continued its predecessors, the "Massachusetts Centinel" and the "Republican Journal," which Russell and partner William Warden had first issued on March 24, 1784. The paper was "the most influential and enterprising paper in Massachusetts after the Revolution." In the Federalist Era, the Centinel was aligned with Federalist sentiment. Until ca.1800, the Centinel's circulation was the largest in Boston. Its closest competitor was the anti-Federalist Independent Chronicle. "The compliments that were frequently exchanged by these journalistic adversaries were more forcible than polite." Russell "can be justly characterized as the Horace Greeley of his time." (Background information courtesy of Wikipedia)

The front page of this newspaper contains a letter written by George Washington on "the present Indian War," as well as a long related piece written by the Secretary of War, H. Knox. This issue has a total of four pages, with local news and numerous advertisements, including a number relating to the sale of ships.
