This particular lot includes an original antique scroll-cut wooden puzzle of a Beatrix Potter character (Peter Rabbit) in the original, decorated box. There are 50 puzzle pieces present, making it complete. The puzzle pieces are in excellent, nearly new condition. The box has retained its shape, is unrepaired and shows some scattered age/wear indications. The box lid bears the licensing name of Frederick Warne & Co. and the cut-out figure is described as measuring 18 inches high.

Condition/Details: Bound in blindstamped green cloth with bright gilt lettering, this antique volume is a scarce early history and anecdotes of the Shawangunk Region in upstate New York, including bear hunting, panther hunting, conflicts with Tories, extensive encounters with Indians, and a section on the discovery of perfectly-preserved specimens of the mastodon in peat bogs. Smith was a New England local historian, producing such works as "The Green Mountain Boys; or, Vermont and the New York Land Jobbers," "History of Duchess County," and "Acadia: A Lost Chapter in American History."

The work is illustrated with many engravings and pen sketches by the author. This ex-library volume shows external age/wear, with remains of library markings clearly visible to spine and covers. Front hinge is cracked. Annotations appear along top margin of title page and on copyright page, otherwise mildly age-toned pages are clean with bright illustrations. "Mark, a violent, inarticulate Negro seaman, weaving his way through dark streets towards his ship, stumbles upon a boy who is dying of knife wounds. Shock and horror root the Negro to the murdered boy's side. The policeman who discovers the two jumps quickly to the easy conclusion Mark is the killer. Mark savagely breaks away from him, and escapes to his ship. The terror has begun." (dustjacket text). Author's inscription and signature appear with date (November 1949) on front flyleaf.
