Condition/Details: Bound in full leather with a paper label affixed to the spine, this antique volume is a scarce periodical dedicated to literature and the arts, and features short stories, poetry and pieces of music, among other items. The work is illustrated with many engravings. The volume shows external age/wear rubbing to the surfaces, corners and edges of the boards and spine. The volume is solidly bound with age-toned pages. The book measures approximately 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" and contains 472 pages.

Notes: Bound in red cloth-covered boards with bright gilt designs across the front boards, and gilt lettering and designs to the spines, this decorative set is a scarce collection of works by a number of prominent literary figures. Some volumes feature frontispiece portraits. The volumes show mild external age/wear, and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages. Volume 25 exhibits heavier wear with signs of exposure to moisture to the boards and text block. The books measure approximately 5 3/4" x 8 1/2".

This lot includes the group of Weeb Ewbank-signed items shown in the corresponding image. Weeb Ewbank is the only coach ever to coach two different American pro football teams to victory in a championship game, winning NFL championships in 1958 and 1959 with the Colts, an AFL championship in 1968 with the Jets, and a World Championship in Super Bowl III in 1969 with the Jets. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978. The items in this lot include a 5" by 7" photo autographed by Ewbank; a Miami University-Ohio Miamian magazine signed by Ewbank with the inscription "Best Wishes Bob! Weeb Ewbank H.O.F. 1978;" a publication detailing Oxford, Ohio, and Miami University during World War II signed by Ewbank on page 27, and an invitation to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation's "Valentine Love Roast" saluting Ewbank from 1978. The program features a colorful print depicting Ewbank, Joe Namath and Johnny Unitas from artist LeRoy Neiman.

The items in this lot were part of the personal collection of Robert E. White, Jr. Mr. White was a former editor and publisher at the Oxford Press, and a long-time theater reviewer of local, regional, national and international productions, with emphasis on Cincinnati, New York City and London. This collection represents the many noted performers Mr. White met, interviewed and knew throughout his career, with a number of autographed and original pieces.

Mr. Tubbs was born in Elkland township, Pennsylvania in 1843, and was a son of James and Anna (Gleason) Tubbs. Throughout his adult life, he became an ardent Republican and active in county politics. In 1880 he was elected a member of the Legislature from this county and was re-elected in 1882. He served during both sessions on several important committees. Governor Hoyt appointed him a member of the Commission on Prisons. In 1879, 1883, and 1899, Mr. Tubbs represented Tioga county at the Republican state conventions. He had a decided taste for research and the compilation of accurate historical data and published several volumes. (biography courtesy of Charles Tubbs' obituary)

This lot includes four volumes produced by the Roycrofters, a renowned reformist community of craft workers and artists which formed part of the Arts and Crafts movement in the USA. Elbert Hubbard, author of these volumes, founded the community in 1895 in the village of East Aurora, Erie County, New York, near Buffalo. The work and philosophy of the group, often referred to as the Roycroft movement, had a strong influence on the development of American architecture and design in the early 20th century. Elbert Green Hubbard (June 19, 1856 – May 7, 1915) was an eccentric American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. He was an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement who produced not only fine books but furniture in this aesthetic, and was a prolific writer himself; he is perhaps most famous for his essay "A Message to Garcia."

The volumes in this lot come from a large set of works by Hubbard, known as Little Journeys. These volumes include a volume on great musicians, great philosophers, famous women and eminent orators. These volumes come from the memorial edition of this set. These volumes show some external age/wear indications, with rubbing to the spines and boards.
