Title: Medical Caricatures

Condition/Details: Appearing in a large boxed portfolio, this volume is a scarce limited edition collection of twelve prints of medical-related caricatures. According to the limited edition statement, 2,800 portfolios of this work were printed for the members of "Editions Medicina Rare Ltd." on permanent, natural Curtis Rag laid paper bearing the private watermark of "Medicina Rara." The plates for the printing were made from twelve original aquatints. Three hundred double suites were placed in boxed portfolios covered in Bolton buckram, and numbered in roman numerals I-CCC, this volume being numbered CCLXI (261/300). Included in the boxed portfolio are fourteen individual signatures. The first signature contains the title page, limited edition statement and table of contents. The second signature contains a brief introduction, and the remaining signatures contain the twelve matted prints. The folio shows light external age/wear. The individual prints show minor wear with pinholes in each corner of the matting of each print. The pinholes do not affect the caricatures themselves. The prints remain bright and clean, and are suitable for framing. The matted prints measure 14" by 17". The folio measures approximately 15" x 18".

This lot includes the group of antique scrap books shown in the corresponding image. These original pieces provide a unique history of central New York State, with newspaper clippings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, primarily from local papers in the southern New York and northern Pennsylvania areas, including Elmira, NY. The scrap books also contain handwritten notes and greeting cards. Several of the scrap books contain the previous owner's name, historian and writer Charles Tubbs (see lot number 2,286 for a collection of his books).

Mr. Tubbs was born in Elkland Township, Pennsylvania in 1843, and was a son of James and Anna (Gleason) Tubbs. Throughout his adult life, he became an ardent Republican and active in county politics. In 1880 he was elected a member of the Legislature from this county and was re-elected in 1882. He served during both sessions on several important committees. Governor Hoyt appointed him a member of the Commission on Prisons. In 1879, 1883, and 1899, Mr. Tubbs represented Tioga county at the Republican state conventions. He had a decided taste for research and the compilation of accurate historical data and published several volumes. (biography courtesy of Charles Tubbs' obituary)

Condition/Details: Bound in blue cloth-covered boards with bright gilt lettering and designs across the front board, and with full gilt to the edges of the text block, this antique volume is a scarce recollection of George Peabody's "...parting dinner to the Americans connected with the Great Exhibition." From the introductory text: "The dinner reported in the following pages was given by Mr. Peabody with the double purpose of manifesting his respect for the gentlemen who were his guests, and of fostering brotherly love, and cementing yet closer the reunion, between England and America." The volume bears an original inscription and signature from George Peabody on the front flyleaf. The volume shows external age/wear with rubbing to the surfaces, corners and edges of the boards. Some areas of the spine cover have detached and are no longer present. The middle 3 3/4" of the spine cover have started to separate from the spine. This volume is bound with age-toned pages. The book measures approximately 7 3/4" x 11" and contains 114 pages.

Watson signed this volume on the title page. This volume is a first edition, fourth printing, according to the copyright page. This work is considered one of the 100 best non-fiction books by Modern Library. The work contains many photographs and illustrations related to DNA. The volume shows well, with some edge wear to the jacket and the extremities, including a tear to the top right edge of the jacket and some sunning. The text block is solidly bound with clean, crisp pages, with light spotting along the edges. The book measures approximately 5.75" x 8.5" and contains 226 pages.
