Title: The Jungle
Author: Upton Sinclair
Publisher: Doubleday, Page & Company
Printing Year: 1906 First Edition

Condition/Details: Bound in green cloth with bright embossed white lettering and pictorial design with a heavy industrial theme, this antique volume is a scarce early printing of this novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning American author Upton Sinclair (September 20, 1878 November 25, 1968). Sinclair wrote this novel to highlight the plight of the working class and to remove from obscurity the corruption of the American meatpacking industry during the early-20th century. The novel depicts in harsh tones the poverty, absence of social programs, unpleasant living and working conditions, and hopelessness prevalent among the working class, which is contrasted with the deeply-rooted corruption on the part of those in power. Sinclair's observations of the state of turn-of-the-century labor were placed front and center for the American public to see, suggesting that something needed to be changed to get rid of American "wage slavery." The novel is also an important example of the "muckraking" tradition begun by journalists such as Jacob Riis.

The volume shows light external age/wear concentrated at the extremities, and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 5 1/2" x 8" and contains 413 pages.
