John Romeyn Brodhead (January 2, 1814 – May 6, 1873) was an American historical scholar. After graduating from Rutgers College and admitted to the New York City bar, he devoted himself principally to the study of American colonial history. In order to have access to the records of the early Dutch settlements in America, he obtained, in 1839, an appointment as attaché of the American legation at the Hague. His investigations here soon proved that the Dutch archives were rich in material on the early history of New York. At the urging of the New-York Historical Society, the state legislature appropriated funds for him to gather and transcribe documents relating to New York's colonial history from various European archives. Brodhead was appointed (1841) by Governor William H Seward to undertake the work, and within several years gathered from England, France and the Netherlands some eighty manuscript volumes of transcriptions, largely of documents which had not hitherto been used by historians. He returned to New York in August, 1844. These transcriptions were subsequently edited by Edward O'Callaghan and by Berthold Fernow, and published by the state under the title Documents Relating to the Colonial History of New York. Title: Travels to the Source of the Missouri River and across the American Continent to the Pacific Ocean
Publisher: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown (London)
Printing Year: 1814

Condition/Details: Bound in three-quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards, this landmark English printing is widely regarded as superior to the earlier American printing which was published in Philadelphia, also in 1814. This copy retains the half title page and all-important six engraved maps on four plates, including the large folding map. The fold-out map in this copy is in excellent condition. Many credit this particular map with launching the modern era of map collecting.

Printing of this volume presented the world with the “definitive account of the most important exploration of the North American continent" (Wagner-Camp), led by Lewis and Clark across the unexplored Louisiana Territory, spanning the entire mid-section of North America from present-day Texas and Louisiana up to Montana and North Dakota. Derived from journal entries of the members of the expedition, including those of both Lewis and Clark, this work details the journey, with descriptions of various Native American tribes, the expedition to what is now Yellowstone National Park, exploration of present-day Texas and more.

Present in this copy are the half title page, the title page, followed by the preface which spans pages v through xiv, the table of contents which begins on page xv and concludes on page xxiv, and the main text running to page 663, terminating with one page of publisher’s advertisements on the back side of page 663.

Some archival work was long ago performed on this book including replaced endpapers and professional re-backing of the title page. At present, the boards are detached and the spine is lacking the bottom third. Internally, the book is in excellent condition. The book has seen very little reading or opening and while the half title page and title page show significant wear and one stamp mark, the balance of the text is bright and clean with occasional, light scattered foxing. The fold-out map is intact and bright with no loss, there is a small ¼” separation beginning along the intersection of two fold lines. The single-page maps are complete and intact, and show age toning and foxing. Facing pages to the single-page map plates have taken on some ink and mark transference. The book measures approximately 8.5" x 10.75".
