Description: This is a scarce edition of this landmark atlas, beautifully illustrated with a handcolored frontispiece (numbered 72) showing comparative lengths and heights of rivers and mountains, 71 numbered handcolored lithographed maps and title page engraving depicting the first landing of Columbus.

All called for maps are present. The order of the plates is out of sequence, with plates 16 to 18 in between plates 51 and 52.
Presents maps of the United States, including (insert) maps of major cities, as well as of countries and regions of the world. Title on the spine reads "Tanner Universal Atlas 1844."

Condition: Antique recased volume in three quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards and gilt lettering to spine. Book shows external wear, with rubbing to rear board and chipping at edges. Fraying and minor loss are visible at ends of spine. Binding is tight. Volume lacks front flyleaf; rear flyleaf is detaching. Frontispiece has chipping and loss to margins, with a small closed tear at lower inside corner. A small portion of title page has been excised, resulting in the loss of a portion of caption and of publisher's name and address. Bottom of reverse side of title page shows taping though there no tear or creasing visible on title page. Staining can be seen at corners and edges of frontispiece and title page. Top outside corners of publisher's notice and table of contents also show darkening. Lightly-aged hand-colored plates are largely unmarked and clean, with only occasional smudging to margins.
