Author: Johann Arndt
Publisher: Reinhardt Eustachius Moller (Frankfurt)
Printing Year: 1725

Condition/Details: Bound in full leather with raised bands, this antique volume is a scarce early edition of a theological work by Johann Arndt (December 27, 1555 May 11, 1621), a German Lutheran theologian who wrote several influential books of devotional Christianity. This, his principal work, commonly known as "Wahres Christentum" (book 1: 1605; books 1-4: 1606-1610), has been translated into most European languages and served as the foundation of many books of devotion, both Roman Catholic and Protestant. Arndt here dwells upon the mystical union between the believer and Christ, and endeavours, by drawing attention to Christ's life in His people, to correct the purely forensic side of the reformation theology, which paid almost exclusive attention to Christ's life for His people.

The volume is illustrated with a double frontispiece and beautiful full-page plates. The volume shows external age/wear, with loss of material to spine cover along the edge of its left side and small perforation in middle of spine (two inches from top edge). Hinges are cracked. Mildly age-toned pages show occasional light water markings. One blank page at rear is loose and laid in. Previous owners' annotations appear on preliminary pages and at rear of book. Text shows no annotations. The book measures approximately 5" x 8" and contains 1232 pages of text plus unpaginated index. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
