Title: A History of North American Birds
Authors: S. F. Baird, T. M. Brewer, and R. Ridgway
Publisher: Little, Brown, and Company
Printing Year: 1874
Number of Volumes: Complete 3-volume set

Notes: Bound in pebbled green cloth-covered boards with bright gilt lettering, this antique set is a scarce original edition of this seminal work on North American birds. This work is illustrated with 64 plates (showing the heads of birds in silhouette) and 593 woodcuts. This work also includes an extensive glossary of descriptive terms. Each volume has over 500 pages. Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887) was head of the Smithsonian Institution and oversaw a period of incredible growth in its collections. His minute description of birds made the definition of local subspecies possible, and went far towards establishing the theory that separating barriers constitute a major factor in the differentiation of forms. Much of his work predated Darwin. His approach established the "Baird School" of ornithology carried on by Elliott Coues, Joel A. Allen, Robert Ridgway, John Cassin, and Thomas M. Brewer.

These ex-library volumes show external age/wear, with rubbing evident to the edges, surfaces and corners of the boards. Each volume bears a piece of green tape running the length of the spine. The volumes are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages. Antique library bookplates appear on front endpapers and card pockets are visible on rear endpapers. Other library markings, such as stamps, are present. The half-title page of volume one bears handwriting in pencil. The books measure approximately 8 1/2" x 10 3/4".
