Condition/Details: Bound in brown cloth-covered boards with bright gilt lettering and designs across the front board and along the spine, this antique volume is a scarce atlas featuring physical geography, and geographical, statistical and historical descriptions, including "...the latest federal census, and the existing religious denominations in the world." The work features numerous maps, engraved vignettes, tables and charts throughout its pages. The volume shows external age/wear with rubbing to the edges, surfaces and corners of the boards, and is bound with lightly age-toned pages which display occasional foxing. The boards are detached from the text block and are held in place with tape running along the hinges. Several pages display evidence of rubbing to their edges. The "Chart of Emblems" pages (4-5) are torn. A few leaves are detached but present. The book measures approximately 14 3/4" x 18 3/4" and contains 134 pages.

Edited by William Cullen Bryant, the work features many illustrations on wood and steel by eminent American artists and engravers, including: Harry Fenn, R. Swain Gifford, Granville Perkins, Alfred R. Waud, F. D. Woodward, W. H. Gibson, William Hart, R. Hinshelwood, S. V. Hunt, F. Holl and E. P. Brandard, among others. Details/Condition: The small original engravings in this lot feature portraits of peasants by renowned artist Adriaen van Ostade (baptized as Adriaen Hendricx December 10, 1610 – buried May 2, 1685). Van Ostade was a Dutch genre painter, the contemporary of David Teniers the Younger and Adriaen Brouwer. Like them, he spent his life in delineation of the homeliest subjects: tavern scenes, village fairs and country quarters (biography courtesy of Wikipedia). The engravings included in this lot are signed in the plate "A. O." The pieces show light external age/wear, with some age toning to the paper.

The work features 16 illustrations, with one frontispiece and 15 tissue-guarded plates. All called-for illustrations are present, with the frontispiece appearing opposite page one.
