Lot 8115

$600
This lot includes the group of Roycrofter ephemera shown in the corresponding image. This material comes from the estate of John G. MacNaughton, who was married to the daughter (Ruth Beebe MacNaughton) of Charles Thomas Beebe. Mr. Beebe worked for the Roycroft Shop in East Aurora, New York, from approximately 1905 to circa 1928. Among other possible duties at the famous shops, Mr. Beebe designed some of the unique trademark stampings for book bindings and probably worked as a bookbinder and finisher as well.

Many of the items in the collection are one of a kind designs, from doodles to drafts to blind stamped proofs. There are also a number of stamped book covers and rubbings of book covers as examples of what is presumed to be Mr. Beebe’s work. Many items are signed and/or dated, giving a comprehensive overview of his prominent career as a Roycrofter.

Information derived from the collection suggests that Charles T. Beebe lived on Grove Street in East Aurora, throughout his employment for Elbert Hubbard, author and founder of the Roycroft Shops.

Elbert Hubbard founded the Roycroft community in 1895 in the village of East Aurora, Erie County, New York, near Buffalo. The work and philosophy of the group, often referred to as the Roycroft movement, had a strong influence on the development of American architecture and design in the early 20th century. Elbert Green Hubbard (June 19, 1856 – May 7, 1915) was an eccentric American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. He was an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement who produced not only fine books but furniture in this aesthetic, and was a prolific writer himself; he is perhaps most famous for his essay A Message to Garcia.

This lot features a large (8" x 11 1/2") proof copy of Elbert Hubbard's Little Journeys to the Homes of Famous Women: Wherein Are Facts Biographical and Critical with Other Mention More Intimate, Gathered in Stray Places on Various Sunshiny Days by Elbert Hubbard. This volume is signature sewn and has never been bound.

This also lot includes six additional signature-sewn, never-bound volumes. Volumes authored by Elbert Hubbard include: So Here Then Is a Little Journey to the Home of Joaquin Miller, The Elect: Selected Writings, Preachments: Selected Writings, On My Way: Selected Writings and Hundred-Point Men: Selected Writings. Also included is the volume An American Bible, edited by Alice Hubbard. Additionally, there are a number of loose, un-sewn blank signatures and some paper watermarked "Roycroft." Lot 8130

$55
This lot features the following piece of artwork:

Artist: uncredited
Medium: Jacquard
Year: undated
Dimensions: Unframed, measures 8" by 10"

Details/Condition: This original piece features a portrait of Joseph-Marie Jacquard, who played an important role in the development of the earliest programmable loom (the "Jacquard loom"), which in turn played an important role in the development of other programmable machines, such as computers. Around 1800, Joseph began to dabble in inventing: a treadle loom in 1800, a loom to weave fishing nets in 1803, and starting in 1804, the “Jacquard” loom, which would weave patterned silk automatically. However, none of his inventions operated well and thus were unsuccessful. In 1801, Jacquard exhibited his invention at the industrial exhibition in Paris; and in 1803 he was summoned to Paris and attached to the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers. A loom by Jacques de Vaucanson on display there suggested various improvements in his own, which he gradually perfected to its final state. Although his invention was fiercely opposed by the silk-weavers, who feared that its introduction, owing to the saving of labour, would deprive them of their livelihood, its advantages secured its general adoption, and by 1812 there were 11,000 Jacquard looms in use in France. The loom was declared public property in 1806, and Jacquard was rewarded with a pension and a royalty on each machine. (biography courtesy of Wikipedia)

This piece is a rare woven silk portrait, completed on the Jacquard punched-card loom. Written at the bottom of the piece is "Carquillat tex." and "Didier Petit" on the left and right corners, respectively, and "A La Memoire De J. M. Jacquard" on the bottom. This piece is in black and white, with fine detail in the weaving. The piece shows well, with some age/wear indications, including some spotting and moisture markings on the margin surrounding the portrait.
