Condition/Details: This volume appears in a Mauchline binding which features a pattern of ferns and leaves stenciled on shellacked wood boards, and green morocco leather spine with raised bands, and gilt designs within the panels. The volume also features gilt dentelles, full gilt to the edges of the text block and pale yellow endpapers with blue cloth hinges. Overall this is a very handsome example of Victorian-era "Fern Ware." The work is illustrated with many etchings throughout. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 4 1/4" x 6 3/4" and contains 445 pages.

Condition/Details: Bound in one-sixth leather with brown cloth-covered boards featuring bright gilt lettering to the front board, this antique volume is a scarce collection of 147 maps and plans of the world, highlighting major cities around the United States. The work features numerous maps and is paired with "valuable statistical tables," and "a list of post-offices of the United States and territories, and census of 1860 and 1870." The volume shows external age/wear with rubbing to the surfaces, edges and corners of the boards. The leather of the spine shows evidence of rubbing. The rear board has started to separate from the text block near the fourth from last page of the volume. The volume is bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages. The brightly-colored maps remain clean and clear. This volume provides a nice collection of period maps and statistics. The book measures approximately 13" x 15 3/4" and contains 120 numbered pages, followed by a fold-out map of Africa, maps of the "Roman Empire" and "Palestine under the Judges and Kings with the Distribution of the Twelve Tribes," and several reference tables listing the post offices of the United States, census information, world populations, distances to world ports, elevations of mountains and lengths of rivers, among other information. Notes: Bound in brown cloth with three quarter leather and raised spine bands, this antique set is considered one of the finest dictionaries to the Bible, edited by James Hastings. The work can be described as an encyclopedia, with some lengthy articles on specific topics. The 194 authors of articles were established scholars of the day, generally Protestant Christians, from many countries, but mostly from the UK and the USA in that order (history courtesy of Wikipedia). The work is illustrated with color maps. The volumes show some external age/wear, with rubbing and wear to the leather, and masking tape on the final volume attaching the spine cover to the boards. Notes: Bound in dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to spines, this antique set is a scarce official history of the activities of the Royal Navy during World War I, with a large array of documentation in both text, interviews, maps, statistics, etc. The first three volumes are written by Corbett, and the last two by Newbolt who completed the work after Corbett“s death. Vol. I describes the time from the outbreak of the war until the Battle of the Falklands. Vol. II details operations in European waters and the operations at the Dardanelles during the first half of 1915. Vol. III covers the Far East and the Mediterranean during the latter part of 1915, and the Battle of Jutland, taking up more than half of the volume. Vol. IV describes the operations of the German raiders and German submarine warfare, as well as British operations at home and in Africa and the Far East from 1916 to 1917. Vol. V concludes with an account on submarine and convoy operations 1917-18 and statistics on production, casualties and naval development in general. The work is illustrated with a great quantity of maps, that are either presented in separate volumes (Volumes I, III, IV, V), in pockets on endpapers, or as foldable maps within the text volumes as well.
