Condition/Details: Bound in blue cloth with bright gilt embossing on the spine, this antique volume is a scarce stated first edition, second impression printing of Hemingway's first major novel, published in the United States as The Sun Also Rises. The work is in its original pictorial dust jacket, portraying a woman sitting on a barrel, holding up a glass of wine. The volume shows light external age/wear, with some sunning to the spine and some markings to the endpapers. The text block is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 5 1/4" x 8" and contains 286 pages.

Condition/Details: This antique work is a scarce original printing of Forster's classic dissertation on Josephus' work. The work contains some of Josephus' text in Greek. The text block contains the title page through the publisher's advertisement at the end, and is well bound with age toned pages, with handwriting on the title page and some ink stains on the last page. This work has been carefully stored in a paper wrapper and an envelope. The book measures approximately 4 3/4" x 8" and contains 65 pages.

One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him "the best modern poet", whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak. Notes: Bound in blue cloth-covered boards with bright gilt embossing and a brightly-colored design on the front boards, and with gilt embossing to the spines, this decorative set is a scarce recollection of the role played by members of New York's troops during the battle of Gettysburg. The work is illustrated throughout, featuring numerous photographs. This set is complete with all called-for maps present in their respective pockets in each volume. The volumes show external age/wear with evidence of rubbing to the edges, corners and surfaces of the boards. The front board of volume has started to separate from the text block. The rear board of volume two has started to separate from the text block. The front board of volume three has started to separate from the text block along its hinge. The spine cover of volume has started to peel away from the text block. There is some mild staining present on the rear board of volume three. The volumes are bound with lightly age-toned pages. Condition/Details: Bound in pictorial wrappers, this volume is a scarce edition inscribed and signed by editor Elaine Steinbeck, the wife of the renowned author. The inscription is on the half title page, and reads "For Helen Hall in memory of my husband and with thanks, Elaine Steinbeck, 1976." In December 1950, Steinbeck married his third wife, Elaine Scott (August 14, 1914 April 27, 2003), and the marriage lasted until Steinbeck's death in 1968. Elaine Anderson was an American actress and one of the first women to become a theatre stage manager.

The volume shows some external age/wear, with moisture markings on the front and rear wrappers. The text block is solidly bound with age toned pages, showing some moisture markings. The book measures approximately 5" x 8" and contains 908 pages.

Details/Condition: The three small original engravings in this lot feature portraits of peasants by renowned artist Adriaen van Ostade (baptized as Adriaen Hendricx December 10, 1610 buried May 2, 1685). Van Ostade was a Dutch genre painter, the contemporary of David Teniers the Younger and Adriaen Brouwer. Like them, he spent his life in delineation of the homeliest subjects: tavern scenes, village fairs and country quarters (biography courtesy of Wikipedia). The engravings included in this lot are signed in the plate "AvO." The pieces show light external age/wear, with some age toning to the paper. The frame shows some wear, with the bottom left corner coming apart.

This lot includes a photograph from an event hosted by the Jewish War Veterans of the United States in 1943 with a facsimile of signed names, an original watercolor of a beach landscape, an original antique photograph, an original poster from a November 19, 2001 performance of "The World of Nick Adams" listing a variety of celebrities to benefit The Association of Hole in the Wall Gang Camps. Books in this lot include a limited edition volume four of Nietzche's work, a collection of work from Whitman and a volume on the work of Audrey Beardsley, among others.
