Title: The Works of Cicero
Author: Marcus Tullius Cicero (Ciceroni)
Publisher: Sebastian Gryphius (Lyon)
Printing Years: 1546 - 1567
Number of Volumes: Complete 10-volume set

Notes: Bound in 17th century French calf with gilt tooling, labels and raised bands on the spines and marbled page edges and endpapers, this antique set is a truly rare find. Some of the text blocks bear justification ruling in red. Individual volumes of this work occasionally find their way into the auction rooms but the complete set displayed no auction history during a search conducted at the time of this writing. A nine-volume later printing was reported as achieving $9,300.00 at Sotheby's on June 22, 1989, as lot number 4.

Sebastian Gryphius (1493 - 1556), of German origin, was the most important printer of Lyon as well as the most prolific printer in France during the most fertile period of French Renaissance humanism. His establishment became a regular meeting place for great scholars such as Andrea Alciati and Rabelais. They, among others, served as collaborators and editors of the press and helped cement the reputation of Gryphius editions as affordable works of great accuracy. The volumes show beautifully with fine patina and some external age/wear, concentrated at the extremities. All 20 boards are securely attached with some leather cracking at the hinges on some volumes. Volume seven is a slightly variant binding – it is period, with subtly different tooling decorations on the spine, no spine labels and complementary marbling on the page edges and endpapers. At the time of rebinding, the page edges were sparingly trimmed, well away from the text. There is some scattered underlining and a period owner’s name written in ink on the title pages. Volume six has loss of the bottom ¾” of the title page leaf, volume nine lacks the title page (a1) and volume ten lacks the title page and two opening leaves (a1, a2, a3). The books measure approximately 75mm by 123mm.
