Title: Natural History of New York: Agriculture of New-York

Condition/Details: Bound in black cloth with gilt embossing on the front board, the antique volume in this lot is the third volume from the mid-nineteenth century collection of work on the natural history of New York. The volume provides "an account of the classification, composition and distribution of the soils and rocks and the natural waters of the different geological formations." This volume contains only plates, many of which are in color, of the various fruits grown in New York, including apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries currants, raspberries and gooseberries. This volume shows some external age/wear, with tape along the spine and rubbing to the extremities. The text block is well bound with age toned pages, containing some moisture markings. Markings from previous owners are present, including a bookplate inside of the front board. The book measures approximately 9.5" x 11.5".

Condition/Details: Bound in half-leather with marbled, paper-covered boards, this volume also features marbled endpapers, a gilt edge to the top of the text block, and a spine featuring decorative gilt embossing and raised bands. This first edition features the following issues points: in the title-page vignette, Captain Cuttle's hook is on his left arm; on page xv, there is no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette; on page 14, ten lines from the bottom, the word "aint" has no apostrophe; on page 26, line 11 has "fidgetty"; on page 40, "shewed" and "shew" are present instead of "showed" and "show"; on page 284, in the fifth and sixth lines from the bottom, "Delight" is present instead of "Joy"; on the last line of page 324, "Capatin" is present instead of "Captain"; and on page 582, the last line has no end period. There is also a full errata page, and a second, smaller errata page present after the list of plates. The work is illustrated with many plates (including frontispiece and title-page vignette) by H. K. Browne (also known as "Phiz").

The volume shows light external age/wear with rubbing to the edges and corners of the boards, and is solidly bound with lightly age-toned pages. A bookplate from a previous owner is present. Overall, this is a handsome, scarce first edition Dickens. The book measures approximately 6" x 9" and contains 624 pages.

Notes: Bound in 1/2 leather and marbled boards, with raised bands and gilt embossing. This folio volume was a beautifully produced survey of both classic and contemporary art of its day. The work is extensively illustrated with engravings, etchings, and lithographic reproductions on heavy, single-sided pages, by recognized masters. This ex-library volume exhibits the typical markings and labels. There are approximately 12 engravings PER volume that have a library stamp somewhere on the page; that leaves many fine, unmarked images per volume as well. The pages exhibit only light, scattered foxing. The bindings vary in condition, but the text blocks are intact. The volumes for the years 1889-90 and 1892-93 have spines covered in black tape, holding detached boards in place. The books measure approximately 10" x 14".

- The Anatomy of the Horse by George Stubbs - Dated 1965 by J. A. Allen & Co. LTD - This volume contains a facsimile of "The original 1766 edition and illustrations, with a modern veterinary paraphrase by James McCunn, FRCS, LRCP, MRCVS, assisted by C. W. Ottaway, PhD, FRCVS. With twenty-four additional plates of Stubbs' drawings for this work now published for the first time."
- Rien Poortvliet's Horses Translated by Anita Boswinkel-Chang with Sonja Boswinkel - Dated 1978 by Stewart, Tabori & Chang - This volume features "...over 350 full-color illustrations of galloping, prancing, gallant horses of all breeds and sizes from Appaloosa stallions to Shetland ponies."
- Between the Flags by Harry S. Page - Dated 1929 by The Derrydale Press - Filled with color illustrations, this volume is a limited edition, numbering 747 of 850. The volume is complete with slipcase, which is missing its bottom and rear sides. A bookplate is present inside the front board.
- Every Horse Owner's Cyclopedia by J. H. Walsh & John Elderken - Dated 1871 by Porter and Coates - This volume features many engravings, and a front board and spine with decorative gilt embossing. The front free endpapers, including the title page, are not present.
- The Naturalist's Library: Vol. XX: Mammalia. Horses. by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith - Dated c.1840s by W. H. Lizars - This volume contains many engravings and illustrations, some of which appear in color. The front board is detached, and held in place with clear tape running along the spine.
