Notes: Decoratively bound in full leather with gilt rule, raised spine bands and gilt tooling, this antique set of classic history was previously owned and signed by Susan Fenimore Cooper, daughter of novelist James Fenimore Cooper. Susan was also a writer, with several published works. Ms. Cooper signed all three volumes in ink on the front fly leaves. The work is illustrated with frontispiece portraits. These volumes were professionally rebound in a fancy, antique binding, containing the sticker of the binder P. Low of Boston. The volumes show mild external age/wear and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages. The books measure approximately 5.75" x 8.75".

Condition/Details: Bound in full leather with gilt lettering to crimson spine label, this antique volume is a scarce collection of "the most useful and necessary forms of writings, which commonly occur between man and man, under the names of acquittances, assignments, agreements, awards, bargains, bills, bonds, conveyances, covenants, deeds, declarations, exchanges, gifts & grants, indentures, leases, letters of attorney, livery & seisin, mortgages, notes, petitions, pleas, receipts, releases, sales, surrenders, wills, writs, etc". Also included are the texts of the constitutions of the United States and the State of New York. Furthermore, there are various acts of Congress together with the "schedules of the whole number of inhabitants in each of the United States, in the years 1791 and 1801". The volume shows light external age/wear, with rubbing concentrated along the extremities. This text block is solidly bound with age-toned and foxed pages. The title page is trimmed along the top edge, not affecting the text. Front endpaper bears names of previous owner. The book measures approximately 4.25" x 7" and contains 283 pages plus 3 pages of tables .

Condition/Details: Bound in black cloth with bright gilt lettering and in the original dust jacket, this antique volume is a first edition work on World War I, written after the first year of the Great War. Political scientist John William Burgess wrote this book "as an American for Americans...He deplores the prevalence of Anti-German sentiment in the United States and considers it altogether unreasonable...Every true American interest, he avers, requires the maintenance of the German Empire in its present organization and power in Middle Europe." (text from the dust jacket cover) This work is in the very scarce dust jacket, in a protective clear mylar cover. The volume shows light external age/wear, with some moisture indications to the boards. The jacket shows well, with some light wear and loss along the edges. The volume is solidly bound with age-toned pages, with foxing along the page edges. The last page has a small hole along the binding. The book measures approximately 4.75" x 7.5" and contains 209 pages.

Condition/Details: Bound in large full leather boards with gilt rules, this antique volume is a scarce early work on the history of Great Britain from famed historian John Speed (also spelled Speede). This is volume two only, and begins at page number 151. The work is illustrated with an engraved title page, featuring handsome illustrations of men representing the Romans, Saxons, Danes, Normans and Britaine. Found throughout the work are engraved headpieces and initials.

This volume has had professional restoration work, with the engraved title page showing some loss along the edges and having been rebacked. The volume shows external age/wear, with the boards detached and some loss to the leather from rubbing and age. The front free endpaper is also detached and no half-title page is present. All pages from the title page through the end are solidly bound with some age-toning and foxing, and occasional moisture indications. The pages are cut evenly along the edges, with a red-tint. A previous owner’s decorative bookplate is on the front endpaper. The book measures approximately 10.75" x 18" and contains 894 pages, followed by an unpaginated conclusion and index.

This lot is part of a large collection of antique and vintage early and first editions that we are offering during this auction. As is the case with the books in this lot, the bulk of the collection features books in their original dust jackets with clear mylar covers. The books in this lot are generally in pleasing condition with some age/wear indications.
