Condition/Details: Bound in dark green cloth with the publisher's seal blind-stamped on the front board and gilt lettering on the spine, this antique volume is a scarce first English edition of noted author Joseph Conrad's The Rescue, in the original dust jacket. The last page of text has the logo for The Temple Press, Letchworth, England. Binding notations are present at the bottom of several pages throughout the text block. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with lightly age-toned pages. Bookplates are present on the front and rear endpapers. The half-title page shows some darkening/age-toning. The scarce jacket shows some wear, with creasing and chipping along the edges, with light loss on the spine. The book measures approximately 5.25" x 8" and contains 416 pages.

Notes: Bound in the original marbled wrappers with printed paper spine labels, this antique set is a scarce French annual covering a variety of topics, such as rural economy, new scientific discoveries, medicine, agriculture, wine making, potato growing, cheese making, veterinary medicine and more. This edition contains contributions from Benjamin Franklin on the use of corn in feeding men and animals and a piece containing conjectures on the weather. In the piece on weather he posits that "the atmosphere contained layers of warmth and cold." He hypothesized "a region high in the air over all countries, where it is always Winter." He believed that cold zone formed hail and snow and counterbalanced warmth from the sun and spoke of the "constant fog over all Europe" in the summer of 1783. This fog occluded Europe and brought on an early winter, a surprise to many but not Franklin. Other contributors included Pitt and Crevecoeur.

 The work includes five fold-out engravings. The volumes show external age/wear, with the spine and label of volume one worn. The volumes are solidly bound with lightly age-toned pages, featuring untrimmed edges. The fold-out engravings at the end of volume one show some moisture indications, and there is a small moisture indication on the beginning pages of volume one. An antique ink signature from a previous owner is present on both title pages. The books measure approximately 4.25" x 7".
