Dimensions: 4" tall and 4" wide

Details/Condition: This original piece is a primitive glazed clay erotic figurine from China. The figurine has a green tint to the clay. This item was crafted prior to the revolution, as evident by earth in the crevices. Sexual items and items of value were often buried by peasants, as they were confiscated during the revolution. This lot is one of several featuring Chinese artwork and collectible items throughout this catalog. This collection generally shows well, with some light external age/wear.

Title: The Luck of the Bodkins
Author: P. G. Wodehouse

Printing Year: 1936

Condition/Details: Bound in sea-green cloth with navy lettering and in the original pictorial dust jacket, this vintage volume is a scarce first American edition from acclaimed humorist P.G. Wodehouse. This work was first published in the United Kingdom, and the two volumes are significantly different, though the plot remains the same. The work was officially serialized in the British Passing Show in 1935, and later serialized in the American magazine Red Book, for which Wodehouse re-wrote the story, reducing the length. This later version became the American edition of this work. The volume shows well, with only light external age/wear to the binding and jacket. The jacket, in a clear, protective mylar cover, shows some chipping and wear along the edges. The volume is solidly bound with age-toned pages. The book measures approximately 5" x 7.75" and contains 298 pages.

Number of Volumes: Complete two-volume set

Notes: Professionally rebound in fancy marbled cloth with three-quarter leather, raised spine bands and gilt tooling, this antique first edition, first state of Mark Twain’s Roughing It was rebound in two volumes. This semi-autobiographical work by Mark Twain was written during 1870–71 and published in 1872 as a prequel to his first book Innocents Abroad. The following points identify it as a first state of this edition: a perfect "My" line 3 on page xi and line one of page 19; on page 242 lines 20-21 read "premises-said he was occupying his"; A capital "E" in Eastern page 330; a capital "T" in trees appears on page 156; "thirteenth" is also on page 156, and the publisher's advertisement appears on the final page. This set also features the double frontispiece illustrations.

These volumes were professionally rebound in fancy, antique bindings. The volumes show mild external age/wear, with light rubbing along the extremities. The volumes are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages, featuring gilded top edges. The books measure approximately 5.75" x 8.5".

This lot includes the group of first and early editions on the theater shown in the corresponding image(s). Some subjects include Francis Wilson, Italian Actors of the Renaissance, and plays of changing Ireland. This lot is part of a large collection of antique and vintage early and first editions that we are offering during this auction. As is the case with the books in this lot, the bulk of the collection features books in their original dust jackets with clear mylar covers. The books in this lot are generally in pleasing condition with some age/wear indications.
