Title: Etchings and Drypoints by Frank W. Benson, An Illustrated and Descriptive Catalogue

Number of Volumes: Complete five-volume set

Notes: Bound in light blue paper-covered boards with buckram cloth spines, this antique and vintage catalog raisonne is a scarce limited edition set, featuring five original etchings as frontispiece illustrations, four of which are artist-signed in pencil. Due to the work being published over several decades, this set is rarely offered complete in five volumes.

Volume one is hand-numbered 190 of 275 copies, and features an original etching frontispiece of flying ducks, measuring approximately 4” x 5”. Volume two is hand-numbered 61 of 275 copies, and features an original etching frontispiece of ducks in the water, measuring approximately 6” x 3.75”. Volume three is hand-numbered 190 of 525 copies, and features an original etching frontispiece of flying ducks, measuring 5.75” x 4.5”. Volume four is hand-numbered 190 of 600 copies, and features an original etching frontispiece of a single flying duck, measuring approximately 7” x 5”. Volume five is hand-numbered 166 of 400 copies, and features an original etching frontispiece of birds in a tree, measuring approximately 4” x 3”.

The etchings in volumes one through four are hand-signed by Benson on the lower left corner. The fifth volume was published posthumously. With each original etching is the original tissue-paper guard sheet. Each volume is profusely illustrated with plates of Benson’s other etchings and drypoints.

The volumes show moderate external age/wear, with rubbing along the extremities, some light loss to the paper on the boards, and sunning to the boards. The volumes are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages. The original etching in volume one shows some light wear and chipping along the edges, and has pencil notations and light moisture indications, not affecting the etching. The half-title page of volume one also shows light wear along the extremities. The etchings in all other volumes show very well. Volumes two through five contain the signature of previous owner Helen G. Farley on the front free endpapers. The books measure approximately 9" x 12.5".

Condition/Details: Bound in light blue cloth with bright silver lettering, border of fleurs de lis and a crest, this antique volume is an early English translation of Rostand's classic drama, Cyrano De Bergerac. This work was translated by Howard Thayer Kingsbury and "accepted and played by Richard Mansfield." The volume shows very well, with light external shelf wear and minor moisture indications to the boards and spine. The volume is solidly bound with lightly age-toned pages. This volume is lacking the frontispiece portrait. A handsome, antique handwritten ink gift inscription is on the front free endpaper. The book measures approximately 4.25" x 7" and contains 241pages.

Condition/Details: Finely bound in limp vellum wrappers with a gilt title on the spine, this decorative volume of Lord Tennyson’s poem is one of 500 copies printed by William Morris at Kelmscott Press. This first uncorrected state of text contains several errors, including on the last line of page 16 "edge" for "head," line four of page 19 stating "myself to myself" instead of "myself from myself," line 18 of page 26 stating "they where" for "they were," and line one of page 69 stating "and war roll" instead of "and the war roll." This printing features numerous initials and a decorative title page, featuring intricate woodcut borders. This is the first Kelmscott octavo book to feature a woodcut title page. The stanza numbers are in red throughout the work. (Peterson A17; Sparling 17; Tomkinson p. 112)

The volume includes the original green silk ties and the scarce slipcase, which is chipped and cracked, being remains only. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. A previous owner’s bookplate has been removed from the front endpaper. The book measures approximately 5.75" x 8.25" and contains 69 pages.
