Book Details: Monograph giving comprehensive examination of the "gabare," a transport vessel used by the French Navy to supply the dockyards, squadrons at sea and the colonies. Aptly named, "le gros ventre" (the large belly), she was abandoned after the Kerguelen expedition in 1772 and sailing alone under the command of M.de St. Allouam; she went on the discover the west coast of Australia in March of 1772.. Her drafts are preserved in Vincennes at the Service Historique de la Marine.
Condition / Notes: Monograph in perfect binding and 34 folded plans are contained in a cloth-covered clamshell binder with jacket. Illustrated monograph has 135 pages.  Text, plans, binder and jacket are all in excellent condition.

Title: Catalogue of the Greek and Etruscan Vases in the British Museum: Vol. I. Part I. Prehistoric Aegean Pottery
Author: E. J. Forsdyke - Sir (Edgar) John Forsdyke KCB was Director and Principal Librarian of the British Museum from 1936 to 1950.

Forsdyke was educated at Christ's Hospital and then at Keble College, Oxford, where he was a scholar. He joined the British Museum in 1907, before serving in the Royal Field Artillery as a captain between 1914 and 1919 in the First World War. He edited the Journal of Hellenic Studies from 1912 to 1923. After serving as Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum from 1932 to 1936, he was appointed Director and Principal Librarian in 1936, retiring in 1950. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 1937, and was also an Honorary Fellow of Keble College.
