Alfred Percival Maudslay (1850 - 1931), British colonial diplomat, explorer and archaeologist, was one of the first Europeans to study Mayan ruins. The work is profusely illustrated. Condition/Details: Bound in cloth-backed pictorial boards, this antique oblong volume is a scarce "beginner's book of magic" inspired by the famous Hungarian-American magician and escape artist, stunt performer, actor and film producer. This book was published the year after the magician's death, and the publishers state: "It was the intention of Mr. Houdini to write a foreword for this book but the famous magician broke his last shackles before he had the opportunity to do so." The work contains many drawings with step-by-step illustrations of how to perform magic tricks. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with unmarked, age-toned pages. Condition/Details: Bound in blue cloth with bright embossed gilt lettering to spine, this antique volume is a scarce edition of this novel by the German poet and playwright. This "Threepenny Novel" is Brecht's only completed novel, written in 1933 and 1934 during Brecht's exile in Denmark; this is the original edition first published by Albert de Lange of Amsterdam, which at the time was quickly assuming the role of a leading publisher of German-language works by artists fleeing the Third Reich. This well-preserved volume shows external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean, unmarked pages. The book measures approximately 6 1/4" x 7" and contains 492 pages.
