Title: "Boots and Saddles" or Life in Dakota with General Custer
Author: Elizabeth B. Custer - Elizabeth Bacon Custer was the wife of General George Armstrong Custer. After his death, she became an outspoken advocate for her husband's legacy through her popular books and lectures. Largely as a result of her endless campaigning on his behalf, Custer's iconic portrayal as the gallant fallen hero amid the glory of 'Custer's Last Stand' was a canon of American history for almost a century after his death.

Details: There are five good quality, antique woodworking hand tools in this lot, all of which are block, moulding, or dado planes. The largest is a horned smoothing plane, #613, manufactured by Sargent & Co. The dado plane 9with brass thumbscrew) was made by H. Chapin. The coffin plane is marked "F. Gaertner," which may be the owner rather than a manufacturer. The moulding planes are marked "Regli" and "T. Wil -- Whittall St." All are made of hardwood with cast steel blades. One adjustable blade was made by Buck Brothers. A flat blade is marked Henry Boker.

Details: This mixed ephemera lot includes a wide assortment of papers, ranging from an 1825 "National Gazette" newspaper to a 1950s trucker's log book. In between is an 1863 letter from George Burritt, the U.S. consul in Rio de Janeiro; almanacs from the 1880s; 19th and early 20th century business correspondence from Heinz, Dupont, Westinghouse, Lochial Iron & Steel Works, and the Arctic Ice Machine Company); 1930s letters on the genealogy of the Woolverton family, nineteenth century correspondence and indenture, and a 1917 letter offering for a sale a mastodon tooth found in Armstrong County, PA.

Miscellaneous papers concern coal mining and drilling for oil, and the explosives that facilitate those processes. Most of this material has been carefully preserved, and is still organized in individual, clean plastic bags, with a few pieces removed for photographs.
