Book Details: Monograph giving comprehensive examination of the "gabare," a transport vessel used by the French Navy to supply the dockyards, squadrons at sea and the colonies. Aptly named, "le gros ventre" (the large belly), she was abandoned after the Kerguelen expedition in 1772 and sailing alone under the command of M.de St. Allouam; she went on the discover the west coast of Australia in March of 1772.. Her drafts are preserved in Vincennes at the Service Historique de la Marine.
Condition / Notes: Monograph in perfect binding and 34 folded plans are contained in a cloth-covered clamshell binder with jacket. Illustrated monograph has 135 pages.

Details: Sensationalism is not overlooked in this collection of 19th century newspapers, which includes a graphically detailed 1874 front page story from the West Chester (PA) "Daily Local News" about the execution of a murder. Other papers include the "Scientific American," "Harper's Weekly," and dailies from Washington, Philadelphia, New York, and other places.

Topics found in these papers include an August 1861 account of "the rebellion" (i.e., the Civil War), the 1891 attempt on the life of future Tsar Nicholas II, the death of President McKinley, and the sinking of the Lusitania. Philadelphia papers include a July 4, 1876 edition, and a "literary and religious journal" from 1833.
