Title: Untitled
Artist: signed, "Jean Michel Basquiat"
Medium: Oil Stick Drawing on Paper
Features: Signed
Print Year: c1981
Width: 27.5" Height: 31.5"
Art Notes: This framed original drawing, in the characteristically vivid, urgent style for which Basquiat is famous, reveals the subject's heart both literally and metaphorically. The armature of his skeleton is echoed by his weapons, the landscape, and the mountains behind him. He confronts the viewer head on, his skull-like face black, white, yellow, and red -- the colors of all humanity.

As the critic Kellie Jones notes, ""Basquiat's canon revolves around single heroic figures... the head is often a central focus, topped by crowns, hats, and halos." Basquiat's work was strongly influenced by "Gray's Anatomy," which he received as a gift when hospitalized as a child. Basquiat's biographer, Fred Hoffman, observed that the artist's work revolved around "suggestive dichotomies," such as integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. His paintings and poetics were acutely political, often attacking racism and colonialism.

Signed "Jean Michel Basquiat," this drawing comes with an original receipt from the Galerie van Langenhove in Ghent, Belgium, where it was purchased in 1990. The document notes that the picture came from the Galerie Kleber Paris in Geneva, Switzerland, where it was consigned by a private collector who received it as a gift from the artist. It does not have a certificate of authenticity.
Condition: Drawing measures approximately 16.75" x 20.75", has been matted and is preserved under glass within large white wooden frame. Signature appears in lower right-hand corner. Paper shows no unintended markings, creasing, tears, or punctures.
