The Neuman image, who is familiar the world over as the mascot for MAD Magazine, actually dates back to the (late) nineteenth century. His creator is unknown, and his face appeared in a variety of media for decades until MAD founder Harvey Kurtzman noticed him on a bulletin board at Ballantine in 1954. Kurtzman appropriated the image, gave it a name, and the rest is history. (His features, which had first been rendered in black-and-white by Will Elder, were fine-tuned and recreated in color by Norman Mingo.) Bound in library binding with bright gilt lettering to spine, this antique volume is a unique collection of shorter works, assembled in a private binding. As was a popular pursuit of the day, an individual commissioned a bindery to create this unique collection, bound in a specific order and trimmed where needed to create a cohesive look to the volume. The included texts were most often originally published in wraps and were ensured a longer life through this process.

This particular private binding volume contains a number of short dramatic works. The majority of these plays are illustrated with a title engraving.
