The volumes in this lot may include some scholarly notations and marginalia from the Paoluccis or other noted historians. Commendatore Anne Paolucci, Ph.D. recently retired from a distinguished career as a professor of English and Fulbright Lecturer at the City College of New York and St. John's University, University of Naples. Throughout her career, she has been awarded several prestigious awards, including the Golden Lion Award, the New York State Elena Cornaro Award and the first national Elena Cornaro Award. She was a former member of the National Council on the Humanities and was the first female Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York. She is an award-winning playwright, poet and also writes fiction.
Henry Paolucci, Professor Emeritus of Government and Politics at the time of his death (January 1, 1999), was a renowned teacher (CCNY, Brooklyn College/CUNY, Iona College, St. John's University), Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party of New York and U.S. Senate Candidate (1964). Condition/Details: Decoratively bound in green cloth with gilt embossing and gilded page edges, this antique volume is a scarce first edition featuring mounted albumen prints of photographs by Frederick H. Mares, alongside text describing various locations in Dublin. All twelve called-for prints are present. The volume shows external age/wear, with moisture indications and rubbing and light tearing to the cloth. The binding shows play, with the boards separated from the text block along the internal gutters. The pages are age-toned, with occasional foxing and light moisture indications on some pages along the top edge, not affecting the prints. The prints are age-toned, with at least one having a small tear along the left side. The book measures approximately 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" and is unpaginated.

Each volume is signed by the author, and this group includes the noted authors Arthur Miller, Norman Mailer, and Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou's All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes is still in the original plastic packaging. These volumes are in near-new condition, showing only light shelf wear. Details/Condition: This original piece, entitled "The Swimming Pool", features a hand-colored antique photograph, in the classic style of renowned artist Wallace Nutting. This print is in an updated frame, and features a pastoral scene of a tree-lined pond with a stony shoreline.

Wallace Nutting (1861 - 1941) was a U.S. minister, photographer, artist, and antiquarian, who is best known for his framed pictures. He also was an accomplished author, lecturer, furniture maker, antiques expert and collector. Notes: This antique newspaper is a reproduction of the front page of a paper featuring an announcement of the burial of "General George Washington," December 14, 1799. The paper reads "On Wednesday last, the mortal part of WASHINGTON the Great-the Father of his Country and the Friend of man, was configned to the tomb, with solemn honors and funer pomp." Also featured is a poem "On the Death of General Washington" by a "Young Lady." Also featured are writings by the President at the time, John Adams. This newspaper was printed in Kingston, New York. The newspaper shows well, with age/wear indications, including foxing, moisture indications and age-toning to the paper, and creasing and chipping along the edges. The center is creased where the paper was originally folded.

Notes: This antique newspaper is a reproduction of the front page of The New York Herald announcing the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The paper features a portrait of the President, with headlines reading "ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN, The President Shot at the Theatre Last Evening", "SECRETARY SEWARD DAGGERED IN HIS BED, But Not Mortally Wounded", "J. Wilkes Booth, the Actor, the Alleged Assassin of the President", "DEATH OF THE PRESIDENT" and more. The newspaper also contains Civil War-related articles, including a headline "THE REBELS, Jeff. Davis at Danville, His Latest Appeal to his Deluded Followers" and "SHERMAN, His Army Moving". This shelf lot includes the group of children's books shown in the corresponding image(s). These books are in excellent condition, many in the original dust jackets, and include works by noted illustrators and authors. This lot is part of a large inventory of books that we will be offering this spring, all coming from a long-standing used and rare book business in the Ithaca, New York region that has closed suddenly due to health reasons. The inventory was built with a discerning eye, including primarily first, early and signed printings of uncommon and out-of-print titles, avoiding the mass-market world. There are no book club editions or otherwise unmarketable books, and this collection includes many volumes in like-new condition or showing only light shelf wear with most hard cover books in the original dust jackets.

Due to the high volume of books we are selling from this collection, we will be offering a number of large lots such as this one during the course of this auction, and during our other auctions this spring. As with all the books from this collection, these are generally in good to excellent condition with some age/wear indications; some of the books may have a mild tobacco smoke odor.

Title: Il Misogallo Prose E Rime

Condition/Details: This antique volume is a scarce first edition of a work from the Italian dramatist Vittorio Alfieri, considered the "founder of Italian tragedy." The Italian work features a frontispiece engraving of chickens on a farm. The text block features wide margins along the fore-edge. This lacks the original boards or wrappers and rear endpapers. A later wrapper is detached and included with the work, with "Alfieri 1799" handwritten in pen. The frontispiece engraving has been professionally rebacked. The volume shows external age/wear, with chipping and some loss along the deckled edges. The work is lacking pages at the rear, ending with the last page of text (stating "Il Fine"). The text block binding shows play, with some pages beginning to separate, and the strings from the binding on the outside of the spine. There is a small hole in the first 35 pages of text, including the frontispiece and title page. The pages are age-toned with occasional moisture indications. The book measures approximately 5.75" x 8.5" and contains 146 pages.

This volume comes from the collection of notable Dante historians Anne and Henry Paolucci, found throughout this catalog. Commendatore Anne Paolucci, Ph.D. recently retired from a distinguished career as a professor of English and Fulbright Lecturer at the City College of New York and St. John's University, University of Naples. Throughout her career, she has been awarded several prestigious awards, including the Golden Lion Award, the New York State Elena Cornaro Award and the first national Elena Cornaro Award. She was a former member of the National Council on the Humanities and was the first female Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York. She is an award-winning playwright, poet and also writes fiction.
Henry Paolucci, Professor Emeritus of Government and Politics at the time of his death (January 1, 1999), was a renowned teacher (CCNY, Brooklyn College/CUNY, Iona College, St. John's University), Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party of New York and U.S. Senate Candidate (1964). Notes: This antique set provides illustrations and descriptions of locations throughout France. The work is profusely illustrated with drawings by Thomas Allom, Esq. All called-for illustrations are present in both volumes, as listed in the table of contents, including the decorative title pages. The volumes show external age/wear, with all boards detached, and one board lacking, and both spine covers lacking. The loose boards are decorative, featuring blue leather and a gilded floral design. The first pages are detached from both volumes. Otherwise, the text blocks are well bound, with lightly age-toned pages, featuring gilded edges. Previous owners' names are in ink on the front free endpapers and the decorative title pages. The engraved title page of volume two and the front free endpapers and frontispieces of both volumes show chipping and tearing along the edges. The books measure approximately 8 1/2" x 10 3/4".
