Book Details: This lot includes the group of antique compilations of The Gentleman's Magazine: and Historical Chronicle shown in the corresponding image(s). These volumes contain the issues of this periodical corresponding to the year 1804. Texts are in double column. Title pages are illustrated. These volumes contain numerous engraved plates, including fold-out barometric chart in second volume.

The Gentleman's Magazine was founded in London, England, by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years, until 1922. It was the first to use the term "magazine" (from the French magazine, meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Samuel Johnson's first regular employment as a writer was with The Gentleman's Magazine.

Cave's innovation was to create a monthly digest of news and commentary on any topic the educated public might be interested in, from commodity prices to Latin poetry. It carried original content from a stable of regular contributors, as well as extensive quotes and extracts from other periodicals and books. Cave, who edited The Gentleman's Magazine under the pen name "Sylvanus Urban", was the first to use the term "magazine" (meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Contributions to the magazine frequently took the form of letters, addressed to "Mr. Urban". The iconic illustration of St John's Gate on the front of each issue (occasionally updated over the years) depicted Cave's home, in effect, the magazine's "office".

Title: Drawings of the Old Masters in the University Galleries and in the Library of Christ Church Oxford
Author: uncredited author
Editor: Sidney Colvin
Publisher: Clarendon Press
City: Oxford
Year: 1907
Binding Style: Hardcover
Number of Volumes: 4 Complete: No
Width: 17" Height: 22.75"
Book Details:
Condition / Notes: This is a scarce collection of reproductions in two parts divided into four volumes. These drawings were chosen and described by Sidney Colvin, Keeper of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum.

Most of these drawings are cartoons, i.e., preliminary studies and sketches made in preparation for paintings. They provide real insight into an artist's technique and creative process; and a comparison of the sketches of different artists bring their essential differences to the forefront. One cartoon of Michaelangelo's is of a single, unattached human leg, which is imbued with great power, complexity, and materiality. Studied side by side with Raphael's deceptively simple outline of a saint in communion with God, two divergent ways of understanding human existence become clear.

This antique set of large folios contains numerous unbound art plates with descriptive tissue guards. Volume one, parts one and two, features 16 pages of text with 42 plates. These well-preserved plates include reproductions of the work of Leonardo Da Vinci and His Lombard Followers, Michaelangelo and His Imitators, and more. Volume two features 17 pages of text and 43 plates of Raphael, the Emilia and more. The prints appear on very thick stock. With original boards, these volumes display cloth tape over their spines. The volumes show external age/wear, with tearing and/or paper residue to taped spines, and rubbed boards exhibiting wear with minor loss at edge. Folios are complete with cloth ties. Pages of introductory text display some taping at edges. Some leaves display chipping along their edges. These former library copies have bookplates to front pastedowns. Library stamps and markings appear on versos of plates.
