Notes: Bound in blindstamped brown cloth with raised bands and bright gilt embossing, this antique set is a scarce collection of the work of William Shakespeare. The work is illustrated with frontispiece portraits and "portraits engraved on steel, from daguerrotypes of the greatest and most intellectual actors of the age". Volumes are entitled "Tragedies", "Comedies", "Dramas on English History", "The Doubtful Plays". These well-preserved elegant volumes show mild external age/wear, and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages with gilt edges. Former owner's name appears in gilt lettering on front covers. The books measure approximately 8" x 11".
