This lot includes the original etching by Bernhardt Wall in period frame shown in the corresponding image.This etching depicts a country auction and is signed and titled "Country Auction - Cornwall Hollow, Conn." Bernhardt Wall (1872 - 1956) was a Connecticut Yankee. He wintered in La Porte, Texas, his family wife's home, for many years. Wall was mainly an etcher who illustrated many books and completed etchings of a number of historical figures, including Lincoln, Twain, Jefferson, Lafayette. In the mid-1930's he produced at least three books of copper-plate engravings during his annual Texas sojourns: "Following General Sam Houston, 1793 - 1863" (1935), "Following Stephen Austin, Father of Texas" (1936, and "Following Andrew Jackson" (1937). During the First World War, Bernhardt Wall designed a large number of patriotic / comic postcards "mocking" Germany. His work has been exhibited at a number of locations, and it is now located at various repositories throughout the world. The painting measures 14" x 12 1/2". This lot includes the hand-colored copper plate shown in the corresponding image. This eighteenth-century perspective view bears the bilingualt title "The Triumphal Arches, Mr. Handels Statue &c. in the South Walk of Vauxhall Gardens / Les Arcs de Triomphe avec la Statue du celebre musicien Handel dans les Jardin de Vauxhall" and offers a charming scene of high society in what became known as the Italian Walk at Vauxhall Gardens, London, England. The statue of Handel is in an alcove at right and the Triumphal Arches in the background. "Published by F. West, 83 Fleet Street, London" printed under title. This view was originally engraved by Bowles in 1751. First published by John Bowles in 1751, this print was published by Bowles' successor Wilkinson. Francis West was a Fleet Street optician, also active as a printseller c. 1830-50. He acquired a number of copper plates of London views - mostly engraved in the mid eighteenth-century by John Bowles - probably after the sale of the trade stock of Bowles’ successor Robert Wilkinson, in 1825.
