Condition/Details: Bound in leatherette with gold stamped lettering and locomotive illustration, this antique volume is a scarce work on railroad engineering. The work contains many in-text and full-page illustrations, as well as 5 fold-out diagrams (two of which are in color). The volume shows external age/wear, with light soiling to covers and small tear to spine, and is solidly bound with unmarked pages and marbled endpapers. A small drop mark on fore-edge has stained a small portion of the edges of final pages. Previous owner's name has been stamped on preliminary page. The book measures approximately 4 1/2" x 7" and contains 591/xxxvii pages plus 7 pages of publisher's (railroad) advertisements.

This lot includes the framed etching of ducks in flight by noted wildlife artist Lee LeBlanc shown in the corresponding image. Lee LeBlanc (1913 -1988) was born in Powers, Michigan and studied at the Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles and the La France Art Institute in Philadelphia. Later in New York he landed a job as a staff illustrator for the "New York Journal". He also attended the Art Students League and studied under Will Foster. In 1937, LeBlanc returned to Los Angeles where he found employment with "Western Lithography" as a commercial artist. Later he joined the staff at Disney Studios. He later held administrative positions at 20th Century Fox and MGM until his retirement in 1962. He then moved to Iron River, Ml where he remained. In 1972 he began designing stamps for wildlife and fishing licenses and won the "Federal Duck Stamp Competition" in 1973 with his "Stellar's Eider".
The etching appears in cream-colored matting. This early work has been inscribed and signed by the artist. The inscription reads "To Ruby Stark from + by Lee LeBlanc" This work is dated 1934. Title: The Rand-McNally Official Railway Guide and Hand Book, for the United States and the Dominion of Canada

Condition/Details: Bound in original wrappers, this antique volume is a scarce railway reference work. In 1856, William Rand opened a printing shop in Chicago and two years later hired a newly-arrived Irish immigrant, Andrew McNally, to work in his shop. The shop did big business with the forerunner of the Chicago Tribune, and in 1859 Rand and McNally were hired to run the Tribune's entire printing operation. In 1868, the two men formally established Rand McNally & Co. and bought out the Tribune's printing business. The company initially focused on printing tickets and timetables for Chicago's booming railroad industry, and the following year supplemented that business by publishing complete railroad guides. The very first Rand McNally map, created using a new cost-saving wax engraving method, appeared in the December 1872 edition of its Railroad Guide.
This work is illustrated with many area maps relating to the timetables that populate this volume. The travelers' handbook at the rear contains descriptions of the principal cities and towns in the U. S. and Canada. There are also a number of illustrated advertisements. The book shows external age/wear: the bottom third of the front cover has been removed and an advertisement from the middle portion of the first preliminary page has been excised. The volume is solidly bound with clean, unmarked pages. The book measures approximately 5 1/4" x 6 3/4" and contains 416 pages.

Condition/Details:This antique volume is a scarce copy of the first issue (October) of this bi-monthly magazine published by Rubric Studios, a company dedicated to book and magazine illustration, and the artistic design of commercial posters, covers, and book plates. This issue contains the first printing of the famous poem "On Board the Derelict" by Young E. Allison. The work is illustrated with many engravings. The volume is disbound. Boards show very light external age/wear. Text block is solidly bound with clean pages.
