Title: The Greyhound; Its History, Points, Breeding, Rearing, Training and Running
Author: Hugh Dalziel
Publisher: L. Upcott Gill (London)
Printing Year: 1887

Condition/Details: Bound in dark green cloth with bright gilt embossing, this antique volume is a scarce monograph on the greyhound, "one one of a series, the object of which is to meet the requirements of the very large and increasing class of fanciers who take special interest in one or other variety of the dog. Each monograph is an enlargement from " British Dogs," giving such additional matter as the modern fancier requires, but which is outside the scheme of the comprehensive work, written for the lover of the dog in general, who does not seek for the completeness of detail which the specialist demands. The cultivation of the dog in general, and especially in the direction of a clearer separation of distinct varieties, has been greatly stimulated by our competitive exhibitions, and the consequent increased demand, at home and abroad, for pure bred specimens. This is strongly exemplified in the large and increasing number of special clubs, each devoted to the interests of one particular breed, and which authoritatively defines the standard of excellence by which it shall be judged. These circumstances seemed to demand the present series of Monographs, which are designed to serve the particular interest of each fancier. It will be found that the club standard - where such exists - has been given due weight and prominence to; and as I have, in many instances, received the cordial and much valued assistance of gentlemen accepted as high authorities on their special breeds, I hope the result of these co-operative efforts will prove acceptable and useful to those for whom they have been made." (text of author's preface). This handsomely bound volume shows external age/wear, with light water markings to front cover and fore-edge, and is solidly bound with age-toned pages and decorative endpapers. Owner's name appears on half title page. The book measures approximately 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" and contains 88 pages plus 26 pages of publisher's advertisements.
