Notes: Handsomely bound in leather with raised spine bands, crimson and green spine labels, and intricate gilt embossing on the spines, this antique set provides a history of the Holland House, originally built in Kensington, London in 1605. The work is illustrated with portraits of Henry Edward Fourth Lord Holland on the frontispiece and Mary Augusta Lady Holland on the title page of volume one, and Miss Fox on the frontispiece and Elizabeth Lady Holland on the title page of volume two. Both volumes contain many other engravings throughout. The volumes show mild external age/wear, with light shelf wear and rubbing along the extremities. The volumes are solidly bound with clean, lightly age toned pages, with brightly gilded top edge. The books measure approximately 6" x 8 3/4".

This classic piece features the original cream wrappers, with a green-tinted image of the Sears, Roebuck building in Chicago, Illinois on the rear cover. The catalog comes with original invoices and order forms featuring the company's letterhead. Also featured in this lot are a telephone catalog from The Garford Mfg. Co., Telephone Almanacs, and an original advertisement for Winchester Flashlights & Batteries.

Title: The Killer Angels

Condition/Details: Bound in blue cloth with darker blue paper spine and embossed lettering, this vintage volume is a first edition, first printing of historian Michael Shaara's second book. This Pulitzer Prize winning work on the Battle of Gettysburg was the basis for the movie Gettysburg. This book meets the criteria for a first edition, first printing, including five lines of text at the top of the copyright page, with the copyright year of 1974 and no other years or statements of subsequent printings. This volume is in the first edition, mylar-covered dust jacket, with the author's photograph on the rear cover, no reviews and no bar code. (identification points courtesy of pprize.com)

The work is illustrated with full-page maps. The volume shows very well for what is often cited as a cheaply manufactured volume. The book shows very light external age/wear, with minor rubbing to the extremities. The text block is solidly bound with lightly age-toned pages. One page shows a light creasing at the top corner, and the last 100 pages have a moisture indication at the top corner, which does not affect the pages. The inside front flap of the dust jacket is price-clipped. The book measures approximately 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" and contains 374 pages.

Condition/Details: Bound in antique leather with crimson spine label and gilt embossing, this antique volume is a scarce first edition of Porter's travels through Brazil, Patagoina, Chile, Peru and the Galapagos Islands. This book contains two volumes in one binding. The work is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and nine full-page engravings throughout. Two of the original engravings are no longer present, including the fold-out map. The volume shows moderate external age/wear, with rubbing to the leather, primarily along the edges. The volume is solidly bound with age-toned and foxed pages, showing some moisture indications. An antique signature from a previous owner is on the front endpaper and title page. Title: The Works of Publius Virgilius Maro, Translated, Adorned with Sculpture, and Illustrated with Annotations

Condition/Details: Bound in oversized leather-covered boards with raised spine bands, this antique volume is a scarce early translation of the works of the classical Roman poet Virgil. This large volume features a frontispiece portrait of the Scottish translator John Ogilby and an engraved title page. The title page is printed in red and black lettering. This volume is illustrated with 100 full-page engravings, including the portrait and title page, and engraved initials and head-and-tail pieces. Featured is a two-page map and one engraving with hand-colored tinting.

This volume has been professionally restored, with new endpapers. The volume shows external age/wear, with the front board detached and the leather rubbing off of the boards. The spine cover is torn in several places, including the crimson spine label being torn in half. The text block is solidly bound with age-toned pages, which show occasional tearing and lacking corners. A bookplate is present on the front endpaper from the library of Ralph M. Ward. The book measures approximately 10 1/2" x 17" and contains 528 pages.

Condition/Details: Bound in brown cloth with gilt embossing, this antique volume details naval architecture and engineering, as of the beginning of the Twentieth Century. The work is profusely illustrated with over 100 plates following the text, many of which fold-out. The volume shows some external age/wear, with moisture indications and rubbing to the cloth edges. The text block is solidly bound with lightly age-toned pages. Some pages show moisture indications, concentrated along the outside edge, primarily on the plates at the rear of the volume. The fold-outs show overall well, with occasional chipping and tearing to the edges and creases. The book measures approximately 8 1/4" x 11" and contains 377 pages of text, followed by the fold-out plates.

This shelf lot includes the group of books shown in the corresponding image(s). This lot is part of a large inventory of books that we will be offering this spring, all coming from a long-standing used and rare book business in the Ithaca, New York region that has closed suddenly due to health reasons. The inventory was built with a discerning eye, including primarily first, early and signed printings of uncommon and out-of-print titles, avoiding the mass-market world. There are no book club editions or otherwise unmarketable books, and this collection includes many volumes in like-new condition or showing only light shelf wear with most hard cover books in the original dust jackets.

This lot includes the vintage Encyclopedia Britannica shown in the corresponding image. This globe is approximately 11" tall, measuring approximately 16" tall with the silver stand. This globe, manufactured by Replogle Globes, Inc., has black oceans and shows the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
