Condition/Details: Bound in blindstamped red cloth, this antique volume is a scarce early collection of the work of Scottish painter Sir David Wilkie (1785 - 1841). The work is illustrated with 72 full-page engraved plates with tissue guards. The volume is disbound, with boards showing soiling and is solidly bound. Text block is complete with age-toned pages that show occasional foxing. Plates have been well preserved and in most cases show little or no foxing. Condition/Details: Bound in red cloth with raised bands and elaborate bright gilt embossing, this antique volume is a scarce theological work that bears a beautiful scene painted on its fore-edge entitled "The Fishing Pond." This delightful painting shows three fashionably-dressed gentlemen sitting in a boat with their lines cast into a tranquil pond. As with any other fore-edge painting, in order to view this scene, the leaves of the book must be fanned. The binding of this handsome volume is remarkably well preserved, with slightly bumped corners and light rubbing to edges. The book is solidly bound with mildly age-toned pages and marbled endpapers.
