Details: This lot includes the last page of an original soldier's letter shown in the corresponding image(s). This letter is handwritten in pencil on a page measuring 8.5" by 12". The reverse side of the letter is a form labeled "Patente de Rendicion Voluntaria de la Presentacion Personal". The letter appears to be from the Philippine American War of 1899-1902. An excerpt of the letter reads "Some of the churches have walls 8 to 10 ft thick and all buildings have walls several ft thick, well made with quarried stone and Portland cement and sheet iron roof. We are quartered in a government stone building but have to sleep on the floor. I have a half a shelter tend 4 x 5 ft and that's all most of them have. We may get cots in time." This handsome piece of furniture is crafted from oak, and has three glass-paneled hinged doors with the original hardware present. This piece measures approximately 46" tall, 34" wide, and 14" deep at the widest point. This sturdy piece is fully collapsible with no internal bracing. The text in this paper is primarily Chinese, with one English advertisement in the upper right corner of the front page. There is possibly gold rush or railroad related content within this paper. Details: This lot includes the Civil War musket shown in the corresponding image(s). This muzzle loader was produced in the U. S. by E. Whitney, and is stamped "New Haven 1833". The trigger and hammer work smoothly with two stops. The sling brackets, trigger guard, and butt plate are all present and intact, and the tamping rod is present. It also has the original mahogany stock. There is an "L" stamped just ahead of the sling bracket, as well as on the side. This may stand for an initial of the inspector of this firearm. Author: Henry Fielding - Henry Fielding was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humor and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel "Tom Jones," a comic novel first published on 28 February 1749 and one of the earliest English prose works describable as a novel. The novel, totaling 346,747 words, is divided into 18 smaller books, each preceded by a discursive chapter, often on topics totally unrelated to the book itself.

Aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate.
