Condition/Details: Bound in black cloth with embossed lettering, this volume is a scarce catalogue of English artist John Hilliard (b. 1945), whose body of work addresses the specificity of photography as a medium: its uncertainty as a representational device and its status within the visual arts, especially in relation to painting, cinema and commercial photography. The volume is divided into four sections covering Hilliard's career, with work form 1969-1977, 1978-1989, 1990-1993, 1994-1994. Each section is accompanied by an essay and examples of Hilliard's work. Writers include Marina Wallace, Martin Kemp, Brian Hatton, Uta Nusser, Patricia Bickers, Thomas Frangenberg and Mike Ware. The book is Illustrated with high quality full-color plates throughout. The book also includes a detailed biography, bibliography and list of works covering Hilliard's career up till 1999. Condition/Details: Bound in original wrappers, this volume is a scarce German-language exhibition catalogue documenting the work of father and son cabinetmakers Abraham and David Roentgen (1743 - 1807). The latter would become the single most famous German cabinetmaker of the eighteenth century, famed throughout Europe for his marquetry and his secret drawers and mechanical fittings. His work embraces the late Rococo and the Neoclassical styles. The work is illustrated with many color photographs of Roentgen furniture pieces. This bright, vivid poster shows beautifully and has some light creasing and wear concentrated at the edges. There is a three inch tear at the bottom. This poster has been folded. It has not ever been taped or pinned. There are a number of tear along the edges and loss of material measuring 1" x 1.5" at the center of the bottom edge. Condition/Details: Bound in brown cloth with bright gilt embossing encased in geometric designs, this antique volume is a scarce history of the practice of ornamental art. It is stated in the preface that "a series of papers on Ornamental Art by the Author, which appeared in the pages of the Art Journal in 1873, form the foundation of the present volume, though in many cases they have been so amplified that the original matter forms but a very small part of the whole. The illustrations have also been largely increased in number, and many of a much richer character have been added, the larger space for illustrations in the present case permitting details of a far more complicated construction." The work contains 431 illustrations. The volume shows light external age/wear, with bumped corners and frayed edges. The book is solidly bound with age-toned pages.
