Title: Ewa Partum, 1965 -2001
Editor: Angelika Stepken
Publisher: Badischer Kunstverein
Printing Year: 2001

Condition/Details: Bound in black boards with pictorial front cover, this volume is a scarce catalogue published on occasion of the exhibit "Gedakenakt ist ein Kunstakt: Ewa Parfum Retrospektive, 1965 -2001" held at the Badischer Kunstverein in Karlsruhe, Germany. This catalogue offers the first extensive documentation of this Polish female artist's work. "In the 1960s and 70s, Ewa Partum was a member of the (Polish) avant-garde. Seeking a 'new reality in art' and considering the 'conceptual possibilities of painting as defunct,' she evolved a conceptual oeuvre which she has summarized in the phrase 'the act of thinking is an act of art.' In opposition to the approach of art academies of the time - which Partum assessed as propagating imitative behaviour - she already proclaimed the advent of 'new forms of contemporary art' in her graduation work: positions examining the relations between artistic medium, signs and meaning. Ewa Partum focused on (visualizing) semantics as the 'raw material' of art. Only that which discloses its inherent function may be described as art." (From editor's preface.)

The work is illustrated with many black-and-white photographs. Texts are in German and English. The volume is in excellent condition, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages. The book measures approximately 8.5" x 12" and contains 171 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50

A line of female workers boldly marches in step leading masses of workers in this graphic. This poster was produced as part of the United War Work Campaign which brought together seven organizations--the YMCA, the YWCA, the American Library Association, the War Camp Community Service, the Knights of Columbus, the Jewish Welfare Board, and the Salvation Army--into one large funding drive charged with raising over $170 million for the war in 1918. In a public address in 1917, John D. Rockefeller described the War Work Campaign as “the greatest voluntary altruistic endeavor the world has ever known. For the first time in history, people of Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant faith are standing side by side and working in closest cooperation for a great common cause.”

Title: "Kimono Book"
Publisher: NA
Printing Year: c.1965

Condition/Details: Ribbon-bound in cloth with bright gilt embossing and calligraphy label to front board, this vintage volume is a scarce work on Japanese Kimono designs published in the 1960s by two Kimono clubs. The book is opened from left to right with full-page, bright color illustrations of kimonos. Each plate has a tissue guard bearing designs that are replicated from those on front cover. The designs of the fabric displayed are not necessarily Asian, but may have been taken from European, East Indian or Western artwork. The calligraphy is written in ancient Japanese writing with Chinese influence, and are therefore difficult for ordinary readers of Japanese writing to decipher. This book would be of interest to historians of Japanese culture/designs and modernistic influences on/from Japan. The volume shows light external age/wear, with some sunning to boards. The book is solidly bound with clean, unmarked pages. The book is unpaginated and measures approximately 11" x 14" . Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $6.50
