Title: The Print in Italy, 1550 - 1620
Author: Michael Bury
Publisher: British Museum Press
Printing Year: 2001

Condition/Details: Bound in original wrappers, this volume is a scarce catalogue of an exhibition held at the British Museum of over 150 works from its collection as well as those of other museums, the first exhibition to present a broad and representative survey of the printmaking of the period. The author states his goal as follows: "The purpose of this catalogue is to show the extensive range of prints produced in Italy between about 1550 and 1620, and to consider how they were made and why. The catalogue is divided into three main sections. In the first the different operations and actual processes of printmaking are explored, from the way that designs were prepared for use by printmakers through the making of the plates to the printing and packaging of prints for sale. The subject of the second part is the types of people - designers, engravers, printers and print dealers - who undertook the publishing of prints. Finally, in the third part, the focus is on places: the ways in which the printmaking business operated within particular cities. Rome and Venice were by far the most important, but brief discussions of Bologna and Siena are included as well/"

The work is illustrated with many photographs and drawings. The volume is in excellent condition, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages. The book measures approximately 8.75" x 11" and contains 248 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50

Three broadly smiling Allied soldiers huddled together in camaraderie in this scene. This poster was produced as part of the United War Work Campaign which brought together seven organizations--the YMCA, the YWCA, the American Library Association, the War Camp Community Service, the Knights of Columbus, the Jewish Welfare Board, and the Salvation Army--into one large funding drive charged with raising over $170 million for the war in 1918. In a public address in 1917, John D. Rockefeller described the War Work Campaign as “the greatest voluntary altruistic endeavor the world has ever known. The tableau in this poster shows a winter scene with the silhouette of men standing in a doorway looking out from the brightly-lit, warm interior of a YMCA facility, in welcome of arriving troops. For the first time in history, people of Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant faith are standing side by side and working in closest cooperation for a great common cause.”
