Title: Paul Wolff: Fotografien der 20er und 30er Jahre
Editors: Sylvia Bohmer / Museen der Stadt Aachen
Publisher: Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum Aachen
Printing Year: 2003

Condition/Details: Bound in original wrappers, this volume is a scarce catalogue of an exhibition of the photographic work of Paul Wolff (1887 - 1951), German photographer who studied medicine in Strasbourg, served in the First World War, and settled in 1920 in Frankfurt am Main. Instead of practicing medicine, however, he opened a photographic agency. This concentrated initially on urban images for book illustration, but expanded into public relations for motor companies, fashion houses, and the photographic industry. In 1933, Wolff published "Meine Erfahrungen mit der Leica" (My Experiences with the Leica), the first of several best-selling manuals which secured him a special relationship with Leitz and a reputation as a moderate modernist. The agency, which included capable photographers like Alfred Tritschler (who, with Wolff, covered the 1936 Berlin Olympics), Elisabeth Hase, and Willy Klar, prospered during the Third Reich. As a promoter of color photography, Wolff was enlisted for an ambitious program to record wall paintings in color during the Second World War. In 1944 his premises and archives were bombed, a loss from which he never recovered.

The work is illustrated with many full-page photographs. The volume shows very light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages. The book measures approximately 8.75" x 11" and contains 96 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
