In this poster, the scene displays a shirtless, grief-stricken soldier in a darkened trench under a sky with menacing black clouds holds his dying comrade in his arms. This poster was produced as part of the United Stated Food Administration campaign. After the United States entered the war in April 1917, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Herbert Hoover head of the American Food Administration. Hoover believed "food will win the war." He established set days to encourage people to avoid eating particular foods in order to save them for soldiers rations: meatless Mondays, wheatless Wednesdays, and "when in doubt, eat potatoes." This system helped conserve food for the war. He helped reduce consumption of foodstuffs needed overseas and avoided rationing at home (dubbed "Hooverizing" by government propagandists. Title: Bruce Goff: Toward Absolute Architecture
Author: David G. De Long
Publisher: MIT Press
Printing Year: 1988

Condition/Details: Bound in red cloth with bright gilt embossing, this volume is a scarce scholarly work on American architect Bruce Goff (1904 -1982). The work is illustrated with 320 black-and-white illustrations and 33 color plates. This book details 500 projects of which 140 were built. This accumulated design portfolio of 500 projects demonstrates a restless, sped-up evolution through conventional styles and forms at a young age, through the Prairie style of his heroes and correspondents Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan, then into original design. Finding inspiration in sources as varied as Antoni Gaudi, Balinese music, Claude Debussy, Japanese ukiyo-e prints, and seashells, Goff's mature work had no precedent and he has few heirs other than his former assistant, New Mexico architect Bart Prince. His contemporaries primarily followed tight functionalistic floorplans with flat roofs and no ornament. Goff's idiosyncratic floorplans, attention to spatial effect, and use of recycled and/or unconventional materials such as gilded zebrawood, cellophane strips, cake pans, glass cullet, Quonset Hut ribs, ashtrays, and white turkey feathers, challenge conventional distinctions between order and disorder. Some notable buildings designed by Goff are the Bavinger House in Norman, Oklahoma, the Ruth VanSickle Ford House in Aurora, Illinois, the Colmorgan House in Glenview, Illinois, and the Pavilion for Japanese Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His most ambitious built work, the Joe D. Price House and Studio, also known as Shin'enKan, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, was destroyed by arson in 1996. Goff also designed the Searing house in Prairie Village, Kansas.

The volume is an excellent condition, and is solidly bound with clean pages. Intact dustjacket is in mylar cover. The book measures approximately 10.5" x 10.5" and contains 388 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $6.50

Title: Visual Impressions of Ithaca
Artist: John Modigliani
Medium: Collage of 21 architectural drawings in pencil and pen, with lettered text in white pencil
Year: c1960
Dimensions: approx. 177”x48” overall; individual drawings between 12”x6” and 16”x20”

Condition/Details: This truly one-of-a-kind piece of art captures a bygone era of the city of Ithaca, New York in 21 detailed pen and pencil studies of buildings and scenes in Collegetown, Fall Creek, downtown, the Cornell campus, and elsewhere. The creator of this ambitious project was John Modigliani, then a student of Architecture at Cornell University. Modigliani was born in Rome, Italy to a prominent and creative family; his father was a holder of several patents relating to the production of glass. John Modigliani passed away recently and is survived by a daughter Laura, a poet residing in New York City.

Highlights of the collage include depictions of long-gone businesses in Collegetown (clearly a more sparsely occupied section of Ithaca at that time), an image of Fall Creek and three houses in the Fall Creek neighborhood, a study of a footbridge above a gorge, studies of trees and natural views, and a drawing of a newly-constructed building at Cornell which dates the entire piece to the late 1950s or early 1960s.

The drawings are mostly in soft pencil with heightening in pen and ink. They are very skillfully executed and betray the hand of a trained draughtsman. Quirky elements like a dog marking a telephone pole and a couple conversing on the footbridge add to the character of the piece. The drawings are attached to a large roll of brown paper and are accompanied by painstakingly hand-lettered text providing commentary by the artist like “…observing the calves in the co-eds’ legs are proof enough of vertical hardships which must be met in linking the campus with the town."

Overall, the piece has a striking appearance with beautiful, strong drawings and text elements arranged in an aesthetically pleasing sequence. The item shows a number of signs of age and wear. These include tears and brittleness at the extremities, intermittent creases, and a darkening of the adhesive, which in some cases has discolored portions of the drawings. Several of the drawings are partially detached from the backing paper and will need to be reaffixed prior to display.

The item is currently rolled as pictured (50” tall), and will be shipped thusly. Due to the size and fragility of the piece, it will only be unfurled at the auction hall upon special appointment.

This is your chance to own a singular piece of Ithaca and Cornell history: a mural-sized time capsule integrating a talented student’s verbal and artistic impressions of the area in what many would consider to be its heyday.
