Details: This piece features a large format of the political cartoon entitled "The Present Organization of the Army," drawn by renowned cartoonist Charles Nelan. This illustration originally made for the New York Herald in 1898, around the time of the Spanish-American War. The piece shows several men fighting in a melee, with the names Sternberg, Alger Shafter and Miles attached to certain individuals, while a man, presumably President McKinley, watches from the top of a staircase in the background. These men presumably portray Brigadier General George Miller Sternberg, U.S. Army Surgeon General; Russell Alexander Alger, U.S. Secretary of War; William Rufus Shafter, a major general in the Spanish-American War; and Nelson A. Miles, Commanding General of the United States Army in 1895, a post he held during the Spanish-American War.
Condition / Notes: The work is mounted on a thin, stiff piece of cardboard and shows some external age/wear. The work is lacking a piece in the top left corner. Along the bottom is a handwritten title of this piece, but the name is cutoff along the bottom edge.
