Bound in three-quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine, this antique volume is a unique collection of shorter works, assembled in a private binding. As was a popular pursuit of the day, an individual commissioned a bindery to create this unique collection, bound in a specific order and trimmed where needed to create a cohesive look to the volume. The included texts were most often originally published in wraps and were ensured a longer life through this process. This particular private binding volume presents a first edition of "David Copperfield" as well as several early American editions of works by Charles Dickens, all published in 1851 by Lea and Blanchard of Philadelphia. The title pages included in this volume read as follows: The Personal History of David Copperfield (with illustrations by H. K. Browne); Christmas Stories: Embracing a Christmas Carol, the Chimes, the Cricket on the Hearth, the Battle of Life and the Haunted; The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells That Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year in; The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home; The Battle of Life: A Love Story. It should be noted that this edition does NOT include any illustrations nor the text of the "The Haunted."

The volume shows external age/wear, with rubbed edges, bumped corners, and minor chipping to covers and spine. The book is solidly bound with age-toned and foxed pages in double-column style. Front endpaper bears the bookplate of the "Library of the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Association." There are no other library markings. The book measures approximately 5.5" x 8.5". Condition/Details: Bound in olive green cloth-backed spine with illustrated paper boards, this antique volume is a scarce children's book depicting the life of American Indians at the end of the nineteenth century. The work is illustrated with "numerous full-page colour-plates after paintings in water-colour together with illustrations in black-and-white." This oblong volume shows light external age/wear, with minor soiling to covers. Hinges are cracked, and text block is intact with clean pages. There is a 1.25" tear to the bottom inside corner of frontispiece that does not affect illustration. This tearing carries over to a small portion of the bottom corner of title page and first two pages of text. Previous owner's signature and bookplate on front endpaper. Condition/Details: Bound in dark green cloth with bright gilt embossing to spine, this volume is a scarce copy of the author's Booker Prize-winning novel. Best known for her long collaboration with Merchant Ivory productions, Prawer Jhabvala is the author of several works on India, the country where she resided with her husband. Her work on India is characterized by the Oxford Companion to English Literature as mingling "affection and impatience with her adopted country." Paper strip with author's typed name and signature has been pasted to title page. The volume is in fine condition, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages.
