Title: The Unpublishable Memoirs
Author: A. S. W. Rosenbach - Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach was an avid American collector, scholar, and seller of rare books and manuscripts.

Abraham was the youngest of the eight children of Morris Rosenbach and Isabella H. Polock. As a child, Abraham spent much time in the shop of his maternal uncle, Moses Polock, a well-known and somewhat eccentric antiquarian bookseller. Polock's famous shop was located at 406 Commerce Street in Philadelphia. Abraham got his start collecting while a freshman in college at the University of Pennsylvania. His company, simply called the Rosenbach Company, went on to help assemble the extensive collections of the Huntington Library and the Folger Shakespeare Library. He also worked for private clients such as J. P. Morgan, Lessing Rosenwald, and Harry Elkins Widener. He published several articles and even books in order to reinforce the interest in rare books and manuscripts.

Rosenbach is credited with popularizing the collecting of American literature at a time when only European literature was considered collectible. He also advanced the idea of book collecting as a means of investment.

Title: Men in Battle: A Story of Americans in Spain
Author: Alvah Bessie - Alvah Cecil Bessie was an American novelist, journalist and screenwriter who was imprisoned for ten months and blacklisted by the movie studio bosses for being one of the group known as the Hollywood Ten.

Educated at Columbia University, Bessie became initially known for his translations of avant-garde French literature, including "Songs of Bilitis" by Pierre Louÿs and "The Torture Garden" by Octave Mirbeau. No stranger to soldiering, through 1938 Bessie fought as a volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Upon his return, he wrote a book about his experiences, "Men in Battle."

Bessie wrote screenplays for Warner Brothers and other studios during the mid and late 1940s. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Story for the patriotic Warner's film "Objective Burma" (1945).

His career came to a halt in 1947, when he was summoned before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). He refused to deny or confirm involvement in the Communist Party USA, and in 1950, he became one of the Hollywood Ten when he was imprisoned and blacklisted. After his release from prison, he worked at the "hungry i" nightclub in San Francisco, running the lights and sound board and frequently introducing performers.

In 1965, Bessie wrote a book about his experience with the HUAC, "Inquisition in Eden." He wrote another book in 1975, "Spain Again," which chronicled his experiences as a co-writer and actor in a Spanish movie of the same name ("Spain Again," 1969).

His screenwriting career was ruined by the blacklisting, and he never returned to Hollywood. Late in his life, however, he was involved in bringing his novel "Bread and a Stone" to the screen in the feature film "Hard Traveling" (1986) starring J.E. Freeman and Ellen Geer. The screenplay for the film was written by one of Alvah's two sons, Dan Bessie, who has also spent his career working in the film industry. Dan Bessie has published some of his father's previously unpublished or uncollected works, notably his "Spanish Civil War Notebooks" (2001).

Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons
City: New York
Year: 1939
Printing Information: First Edition
Binding Style: Hardcover
Pagination: 354 pages
Width: 6" Height: 8.25"
Book Details: A memoir of the Spanish Civil War by a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, volunteers from the United States who served in the International Brigades. They fought for Spanish Republican forces against Franco and the Spanish Nationalists.

"Alvah Bessie enlisted in the Lincoln Battalion of the Spanish Loyalist Army in the autumn of 1937; arrived in Spain on February 3, 1938, and after five weeks of intensive training was sent to the front lines. He saw his first fighting in the Aragon offensive and retreat when Franco drove through to the Mediterranean; and served in the Ebro offensive from July until the time when all International Brigades were withdrawn from the Loyalist lines. This book tells the story of what he saw -- starting with the arrival of a handful of Americans in France, with their night march across the mountainous border and their journey in frigid, crowded freight cars across the Spanish countryside, there follows a vivid account of the moulding of an army from men of all ages, occupations and nations."
