Currency,
including coins, is a natural extension of what we do.
Many of the estates we handle include impressive collections
of coins and other currency and these frequently are
headline items in our catalogs. Whether it’s a
mis-stamped 20th century U.S. Mint nickel, a Confederate
banknote or an ancient bronze coin, you could find it
at National Book Auctions.
People
have hoarded coins for their bullion value for as long
as coins have been minted, although the collection of
coins for their artistic value was a later development.
According to Suetonius in his De vita Caesarum, written
in the first century, the emperor Augustus would sometimes
present old and exotic coins to friends and courtiers
during festivals and other special occasions. Contemporary
coin collecting and appreciation began around the fourteenth
century. During the Renaissance coin collecting became
a fad among some members of the privileged classes.
Given this long and rich history of collecting the various
forms of currency, there exists today, a veritable sea
of coins and currency in private and public collections.
Accordingly, you need expertise on your side when taking
a collection or individual piece to market.

Book Auctions would be pleased to discuss marketing
