Title: The Arabian Nights' Entertainments

Condition/Details: Bound in green cloth with gilt embossing on the spine, this antique volume is a scarce early version of what is commonly known as One Thousand and One Nights or Arabian Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. The work as we have it was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars across the Middle East and North Africa. The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature. Though the oldest Arabic manuscript dates from the 14th century, scholarship generally dates the collection's genesis to around the 9th century. (history courtesy of Wikipedia)

The work contains "nearly one hundred engravings," according to the title page. The volume shows external age/wear, with rubbing to the extremities, and is solidly bound with age toned pages. The following group of volumes were produced by the Roycrofters, a renowned reformist community of craft workers and artists which formed part of the Arts and Crafts movement in the USA. Elbert Hubbard founded the community in 1895 in the village of East Aurora, Erie County, New York, near Buffalo. The work and philosophy of the group, often referred to as the Roycroft movement, had a strong influence on the development of American architecture and design in the early 20th century. Elbert Green Hubbard (June 19, 1856 – May 7, 1915) was an eccentric American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. He was an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement who produced not only fine books but furniture in this aesthetic, and was a prolific writer himself; he is perhaps most famous for his essay "A Message to Garcia."

The volumes in this lot include titles from the Little Journeys to Homes of Great Lovers, Great Business Men, Reformers, Great Teachers, Great Scientists, Great Philosophers, and more. Additionally, this group includes A Message to Garcia and copies of the The Roycrofter.

Condition/Details: Stored in a dark green box with bright gilt embossing, this original folio contains 30 multicolored lithographed prints of the fish and game of New York State. Most of the fish prints are signed in type S.T. Denton or Denton and some bird prints signed in type Louis Agassiz Fuentes. Other artists include Oliver Kemp and J.L. Ridgeway. The prints are single sided printed on heavy glazed stock paper. The green case shows age/wear indications, with some rubbing to the edges. The prints show well, with bright original colors. Some of the prints show light wear along the edges, with minor creasing. The prints each measure 9 3/8" by 12". An additional set of prints is included. These prints, not from the Fish and Game of the State of New York series, depict a variety of birds.
