Alfred Percival Maudslay (1850 - 1931), British colonial diplomat, explorer and archaeologist, was one of the first Europeans to study Mayan ruins. The work is profusely illustrated. This book was published the year after the magician's death, and the publishers state: "It was the intention of Mr. Houdini to write a foreword for this book but the famous magician broke his last shackles before he had the opportunity to do so."
