Title: Geology of Mongolia
Author: Charles P. Berkey and Frederick K. Morris
Publisher: The American Museum of Natural History
Printing Year: 1927 First Edition, with Author-Signed Letter

Details/Condition: Bound in its original orange cloth boards with black embossing, this large antique text is a scarce title from the Central Asiatic Expeditions series. A letter from the author, written on Columbia University letterhead, is tipped-in to the front free endpaper. The letter is addressed to Dean Herbert E. Hawkes and reads, "In recognition of your keen interest in nature’s problems in distant fields, and with personal appreciation of the support that you have always given to those who try to solve them. Charles P. Berkey, Chief Geologist, The Central Asiatic Expeditions, March 25, 1928." Berkey was a noted authority in the field of geology and was published many times including, Geology of Mongolia; A Reconnaissance Report Based on the Investigations of the Years 1922-1923 (1927), Geology of the New York City (Catskill) Aqueduct (1911), and Important Results of the Central Asiatic Expeditions (1926).
Herbert E. Hawkes was an American mathematician and educator. His long tenure as Dean of Columbia College earned him the title "the dean of American college deans". Hawkes took over as dean in 1918 and served in that role until his death in 1943. Hawkes was known as a supporter of general education. He promoted a full undergraduate education and opposed the "Columbia plan" to fast-track students to graduate school in under four years. In 1919, he and a small group of other faculty members helped assemble a sequence of war-issues classes known as "Contemporary Civilization;" this would become a more general year-long philosophy course and the cornerstone of the college's famous Core Curriculum. In the 1930’s he pushed through a similar year-long humanities sequence, to become the Core Curriculum's "Literature Humanities" course. (courtesy of wikipedia)
This book is Volume II from the series and is entitled Natural History of Central Asia. The work is illustrated with many photographs, drawings and maps, including six folding maps located in the rear pocket. The volume shows some external age/wear concentrated at the extremities, and is solidly bound with lightly toned pages and library markings. The book measures approximately 8.75" x 11.25" and contains 475 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $7.50
