| Lot 948 | Title: Egyptian Irrigation
Author: W. Willcocks Publisher: E. & F. N. Spon (London) Printing Year: 1889 First Edition
Details/Condition: Bound in its original navy cloth boards with gilt and black embossing, this antique text is a scarce first edition copy of this important Egyptology title. The preface begins: "This work embodies the information collected during four and a half years, of the irrigation systems of Egypt, and a resumé of the works carried out by Sir Colin Moncrieff. The author trusts it will be found useful by irrigation engineers generally, as some of the systems of irrigation are peculiar to the country, have been practiced with eminent success these 5000 years, and might with advantage be copied in countries where the rainfall is insignificant. From the beginning to the end of the work the author has not hesitated to impress his firm conviction that the modern system of irrigation cannot last in a country where there is no rainfall, unless it is modified by the ancient basin system." The work is illustrated with many drawings, charts and maps, including several fold-out illustrations and color highlights. The text concludes with a nine-page advertisers’ catalog which features several handsome engravings of water trans-location equipment (a sampling is shown below). The volume shows some external age/wear including spine re-covering, and is solidly bound with bright pages and library markings. The book measures approximately 7.5" x 10.5" and contains 367 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $6.50
