| Lot 501 | Title: History of the Manufacture of Iron in All Ages
Author: James M. Swank Publisher: the author Printing Year: 1884 First Edition
Details/Condition: Bound in its original dark green cloth boards with gilt embossing, this antique text is a scarce history of metallurgy which is very rare to find in the first edition. The title continues, "particularly in the United States for three hundred years, from 1585 to 1885." Swank penned several historical publications including Cambria County Pioneers – A Collection of Brief Biographical and Other Sketches Relating to the Early History of Cambria County, Pennsylvania (1910). He served as Secretary and General Manager of the American Iron and Steel Association for 38 Years, From 1872 To 1910. Until Swank approached the study, no historical record of the American industry had been undertaken by any of the authoritative writers upon iron and steel. His scope is expansive, but the greatest value of this work is in its accounts of the early forges and mills in New England, New York, New Jersey, and especially Pennsylvania. He also covers similar operations through the South, Mid-West, and West.
Written just as the American iron, steel, and coal industries were poised to take over leadership in worldwide production, this is an important record of the industrial and commercial revolution of the 19th century. |
