Title: History of the Manufacture of Iron in All Ages
Author: James M. Swank
Publisher: the author
Printing Year: 1884 First Edition

Details/Condition: Bound in its original dark green cloth boards with gilt embossing, this antique text is a scarce history of metallurgy which is very rare to find in the first edition. The title continues, "particularly in the United States for three hundred years, from 1585 to 1885." Swank penned several historical publications including Cambria County Pioneers – A Collection of Brief Biographical and Other Sketches Relating to the Early History of Cambria County, Pennsylvania (1910). He served as Secretary and General Manager of the American Iron and Steel Association for 38 Years, From 1872 To 1910. Until Swank approached the study, no historical record of the American industry had been undertaken by any of the authoritative writers upon iron and steel. His scope is expansive, but the greatest value of this work is in its accounts of the early forges and mills in New England, New York, New Jersey, and especially Pennsylvania. He also covers similar operations through the South, Mid-West, and West. Written just as the American iron, steel, and coal industries were poised to take over leadership in worldwide production, this is an important record of the industrial and commercial revolution of the 19th century.
The volume shows some external age/wear concentrated at the extremities, and is securely bound with bright pages and library markings. The book measures approximately 6.75" x 10" and contains 428 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $6.50

Title: Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia
Author: Joseph Bonomi and Samuel Sharpe
Publisher: Smith, Elder & Co. (London)
Printing Year: 1862

Details/Condition: Bound in re-cased boards bearing the original cloth coverings with fancy gilt embossing and full gilt page edges, this antique text is a very scarce early Egyptology title of particular note for its photographic plates. The work is "illustrated by one hundred stereoscopic photographs taken by Francis Frith for Messrs. Negretti and Zambra."
Frith was one of the pioneers of photography and his early fame largely rested on his photographic images of Egypt and the Holy Land. He was one of the first to develop the photographic postcard, which derived from the Victorian passion for the "carte de visite". Artistic acclaim arrived in 1861 when Frith's stereoscopic prints won a medal at that year's "Great Exhibition". The following year, Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia was published using prints from that series. (courtesy of egyptologyonline.com)
The photographs display many ruins, tombs, temples and expedition scenes and are original photographs, mounted on blank, heavy leaves. Each photograph is accompanied by explanatory text entries by Bonomi and Sharpe separately, or by just one of them. The title page continues, "with descriptions and numerous wood engravings." Joseph Bonomi was an English sculptor, artist, architect, published Egyptologist and museum curator. His credential as an Egyptologist was launched when he served in Robert Hay’s expedition to Egypt and then illustrated James Burton’s Excerpta Hieroglyphica. For close to 20 years, Bonomi traveled in Egypt and neighboring countries. After returning to England in the mid-1840’s, he was charged with cataloguing and illustrating many Egyptian collections (including that of Samuel Birch); he also set up the Egyptian Court at The Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and helped to arrange the Egyptian exhibits in the British Museum in London. (courtesy of wikipedia) Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia was one of several works on which Bonomi collaborated with Samuel Sharpe. An accomplished Egyptologist, Sharpe published several solo titles including The Chronology and Geography of Ancient Egypt, Hebrew Inscriptions from the Valleys Between Egypt and Mount Sinai, The Religion of Lower Egypt, and The History of Egypt.
We have collated the book and found it complete except for plate number three, "The Pyramids of Gizeh". The text for that plate is present. The table of contents calls for plate 46 to be found at page 125 but instead it is bound as the frontispiece. The professional archival restoration of the book included new compatible endpapers. The volume shows some external age/wear, and is solidly bound with bright pages, some foxing to beginning and final pages, and library markings. The book measures approximately 7.75" x 9.5" and contains 240 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $9.50

This auction lot includes a group of 30 bent wire bookends for use with the style of library shelving we are selling at this auction. The bookends are very easy to use, simply squeeze them together and put them into the tracks on the insides of the shelves. They adjust easily back and forth along the shelf and are a great advantage on any shelves which are not filled to capacity with books. This is one of several groups of these bookends that we are selling at this auction. These bookends are in good condition with some indications of age/wear.
