| Lot 155 | Title: Bibliotheca Biblica
Author: William Orme Publisher: Adam Black and Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green (London) Printing Year: 1824
Details/Condition: Bound in modern black cloth boards with gilt embossing, this antique text is a scarce early theological compilation. The title continues, "A select list of books on sacred literature; with notices, biographical, critical, and bibliographical." The preface begins, "The following work is designed to furnish the means of easy reference to the most useful books in the important department of Biblical literature. Under this head are included, Polyglots, and editions of the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures; Concordances, Lexicons, and Introductions to the Bible; works relating to its geography, chronology, and antiquities; translations and commentaries; books which treat of the principles of sacred criticism, hermeneutics, and philology; and numberous productions of a miscellaneous nature, which furnish illustrations of the sacred writings. Of the importance of such a work, there can be but one opinion among theologians; but the difficulties which belong to its successful accomplishment are very considerable." Orme’s success in creating the resource he desired is demonstrated by the frequency with which this title is cited by myriad works in this field. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with bright pages and library markings. The title page shows wear significantly advanced relative to the rest of the book and some archival restoration was performed to the title page during re-binding. There is a period owner’s name inscription on the top of the title page which reads "Thomas White". The book measures approximately 5.5" x 8.75" and contains 491 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
