Title: Three Early Sixteenth Century Tapestries
Author: Phyllis Ackerman (1893 – 1977)
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Printing Year: 1932

Details/Condition: This immense folio is housed in its original flapped casing with ribbon ties and includes a 48-page textual section followed by the complete set of 43 plate illustrations, all printed on heavy cream parchment. This folio is from the series entitled The Rockefeller McCormick Tapestries". The three tapestries analyzed in this work are Verdue with Animals , The Boar Hunt , and The Bear Hunt (all cited as being from Tournai, about 1520). The title page continues, "With a Discussion of the History of the Tree of Life." The plates include a variety of reproductions of scenes in the tapestries including close-up views and renderings of particular elements in isolation.
Phyllis Ackerman was an author, editor, teacher and translator in the fields of Persian textiles, European tapestries, Chinese bronzes, iconography, and symbolism. An accomplished authority in her field, her bibliography includes 244 entries. She was the wife of Arthur Upham Pope, a professor of whom she was a student at the University of California, Berkeley during World War I. Pope’s influence first drew Ackerman to leave the field of mathematics, in which she was considered a prodigy, and together they published A Survey of Persian Art (Oxford University Press, 1939). Their most important and enduring legacy, A Survey of Persian Art was produced in six Imperial folio volumes and was the largest and most significant publication dedicated to the art of one culture from its earliest times. (courtesy of iranica.com)
The volume shows some external age/wear including spine recovering, and is in excellent condition internally. The pages are bright with only a few light age/wear marks, this folio was clearly handled very little and bears minimal library markings, limited to a pocket and bar code label attached to the inside of the front cover – there are no stamps or other library markings. The folio measures approximately 16" x 21". Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $12.50
